I went to see the movie, "The Day the Earth Stood Still".. or something like that, with my daughter a couple of days ago... IT SUCKED!

Actually, the premise was pretty good.. it's just the trashy old "Hey! There's them a..l..i..a..n..s.. let's shoot 'em! Oops, I thinks we just made'em mad", crap that totally ruined my time at the theater.

I actually had to get up and leave a few times because I was getting pissed at the flaky writing and acting.

Let's see....

"Alien" beings descend to earth and what do the humans of the year 2008 do?
Oh.. right!... bring out our military and start shooting at them.
I've seen this same stupid storyline for around 40 yrs now.

Hmm, big alien robot thing appears... SHOOT IT!... oops... our puny little M16's won't kill it... oops.. we just pissed it off!

And the best one?
We capture an alien that talks english! AND the government forgoes all common sense and tries to bully this being into submission?

GAWD THIS CRAP IS KILLING ME! :wall:

Like I said, I did enjoy the premise that other beings might drop in and tell us we're really screwing up things here on this big rock and it's time for us to either straighten up or perish.

I actually missed the entire ending which I figure from the stupid dialogue and acting by Bates & Company was some sort of "drop the A-Bomb" and annihilate the aliens... oh.. and a few Americans... no big deal!

My daughter said she enjoyed the movie.. didn't rant and rave about it, and unfortunately noticed I wasn't enjoying the movie much at all.

This is why I rent Independent Movies and sit at home watching them! Movies that are well written, require use of more than 32 brain cells (those cells which are only needed to reach into the greasy popcorn bag and extract Real Fake Buttered Popcorn!), and do not regurgitate the same old hollywood crap' ola!

I also like foreign films.

Now, I do like the mindless comedy every once-in-a-while, partly because I know what I'm fixing to see.

I just can't stand movies that hype themselves as some great story, only to see mindless scripts, overdone fx, and poor acting, supported by re-hashed themes.

PLEASE HOLLYWOOD... SHOW ME AN ALIEN MOVIE WHERE THE U.S. GOVERNMENT, MILITARY, SCIENCE COMMUNITY, AND POPULACE DO NOT ACT LIKE A BUNCH OF IGNORANT REDNECKS (oops, that's redundant! ), SHOOTING UP ANYTHING THAT FALLS FROM THE SKY!

My daughter and I also just finished watching JERICHO, which was cancelled twice by CBS.
I liked this series as a whole. Too bad it's not around anymore.
You won't catch me watching reality tv shows, or those stupid shows like Oprah, Dr Phil, The Today Show et. al.

Thankfully I don't get regular t.v. in my home... I'd probably wind up kicking in the tv screen or shooting it out of sheer frustration!

Hate to break it to you, but this is a remake of a 50-year-old movie...;) The original was actually better, considering the times...;) Still, they do tend to recycle more than they used to. Haven't actually gone to the movies for years.

A whole lot of remakes are coming your way. Even Knight Rider...sigh...;)

When I was in New York City, I saw "Miss Siagon" and between the acts I mentioned to another playgoer "Its an interesting update of Madame Butterfly" and remembered not to gape and gasp when she had never heard of the original.

Michael Renne rocked, too!

The original isn't good, it's a classic. Shame on them for remaking it. Double shame for casting Keanu.

i didn't see this film despite being a fan of keanu... i heard from
a review that the original fifties film was better. anyway,
there's always that possiblity that certain films would suck
even if they're big budgetted, its's simply how the industry work
they expect the public to patronize their product just because
it's their product... which i find annoying

The original film is a favourite of mine, I first saw it at Saturday morning matinee 45 years ago and it was old then.
Yes the remake is disappointing despite my liking Keanu Reeves. I think a lot of things could have been done a lot better myself I have always said I would like to see Stephen Spealburg remake the film.

But I did not go to the cinema expecting much.

Have you watched 'Das Leben der Anderen' ('The Lives of Others')?

It's a German film and I recommend it highly.

Movies in general suck nowadays, and I stopped watching them a long time ago.
Seems to me like the good movies only come out once every 5-10 years or so.

If you've researched the movie and it doesn't look like you'll enjoy it, don't waste your money on it. Period. Nobody's standing behind you with a gun telling you you have to go in and sit down....

I have NEVER found "independent" movies to be inherently better than studio films. With both, it's a case of the INDIVIDUAL films. The same goes for "foreign movies"--there's a lot of crap being made all over the world. Just because something's not from a studio in Los Angeles or New York doesn't make it good out of hand.

Oh... I didn't know that. I have seen some remakes that do a good job though, but I find they are the exception for me.
When the movie, "The Mighty Joe Young" came out back in the 90's, I made sure to show my daughter the original movie also... just for comparison.

As for movies like "Stuart Little", we had already read our daughter the original story before the movie came out.

I'll look around for it. Thanks!

I'm not sure if this was meant for me, but just for the record... I did not research the movie before going to see it.
My daughter really wanted to see it and I let her pick the movie for that night.

I do agree with your statement in a general sense, but I really also believe that movie-for-movie, from everything I've been renting and going to see over many years... Independents are MUCH better than the standard Hollywood flick, to me.

I'm not saying this applies to anyone else... I'm saying this is my opinion only.
One of the reasons I like Independent movies over Hollywood movies so much is the over-use of fx and cg by Hollywood.
Is is my opinion that they use so much of this that it overshadows the actual story and relieves the actors from the burden of carrying the movie.

Another thing I find rampant with Hollywood movies is how they give the viewer EVERYTHING to know about the characters, plot, ending....
The real old Hollywood films I enjoy, and the Independent movies I really enjoy, don't explain every little facet, or show too much, leaving the viewer to interpret the movie for themselves.
In leaving me room to ponder certain character traits, or what actually happened when the victim slipped behind the door... instead of showing me all the blood & gore, I get to use my imagination based upon my life experiences.

This allows me engage with the writers and actors on a whole different level than being blasted by all the fx and cg Hollywood throws at me in their films.

Again... I do enjoy some Hollywood movies, but movie-for-movie... Independents and Foreign films are so much better than the standard Hollywood film... in my opinion.

yeah mostly, but there is a trend to over-intelectualise, some stuff that comes out of Europe is just so depressing and dull and unnecessarily ambiguous. I guess it's two sides of the same coin, you just have to keep looking for the nice middle-ground. :P

Actually... I didn't think it was so terrible...
at least they remade something that was actually old for a change.

Erm... to be honest... if an alien landed the people best placed to detect it would probably be the US military... and based on what I've seen so far ... partially about military people (sorry if I offend) but mostly about the sorts of people who become "bosses", that's the sort of redneck behaviour I'd expect.

Look at E.T. his interactions were all pretty goood until the military/science goons showed up.
Close Encounters is another good Sci-Fi where you get to see the military behaving a little differently...

Yes I have seen it and concur.

My father was in Hungary in the sixties. He said the state buildings were very much like that even though the film took place much more recently in East Germany. However the Hungarian equivalent police was nowhere near as malicious the Stasi. The detail that the stasi went to was incredible. Having said that the Hungarians did sort of shadow them sometimes, they tried bug them embassy and some people’s flats. They tried honey traps. My dad is very aspie like and was unmarried at the time so they sent a man

They didn’t have quiet rooms back then so instead they would turn on all the taps or play a recording of a cocktail party.

Hollywood doesn't have much to offer anymore, but you have to be careful with independent films. I've seen a few really good indie films, but there are plenty which can be designated as total excrement.
