Haven't seen it myself, but read this review by an Aspie:

I find it interesting and well-drawn, but it makes me feel bad after I watch it. I might finish it eventually, though.

I think that it is, it has been one of my favourite anime this year. I could really connect with her social awkwardness and anxiety, in some ways it is presented in a way that you laugh at the terrible situations and decisions she makes, but because it feels so familiar it allows me to laugh at myself. It can be hard to watch due to being cringe worthy, but it is fair.

I can definitely feel that, some parts feel so hard to watch, but still good. I know that there was one particular scene with her cousin that I actually had to pause and walk away from my computer, it was so embarrassing the situation that she had dug for herself.

I got halfway through the first episode, but had to quit when she threatened to kill herself if her brother wouldn't talk to her.

Evangelion and Madoka traumatized me so much that they made me overly sensitive to any kind of dark overtones in anime. Once crap starts to hit the fan in any kind of anime, I immediately turn it off.

(Of course I'm not stupid and realize that she didn't kill actually attempt suicide, but still... Watamote seems to be a difficult watch for most people, so I'm not surprised that I couldn't stomach it either).

If you want a cringe comedy (ie. the sort of thing where a main character attempts to do something but always ends up making a fool of themselves either through their own crooked logic or just plain bad luck), with highly embarrassing (I can't stress that part enough, people) situations and over-the-top reactions (mostly by the main character Tomoko) then Watamote's the comedy (non-ecchi) anime of the year for you.

I felt far too bad for Tomoko since I saw a lot of myself in her when I first started secondary school (sort of junior high and high school put together) so I gave up on episode 2 but if you like that sort of socially-awkward comedy, then you're well served.

I say give it a go and see what you think for yourself. Oh and don't judge the anime by its OP; Watamote is nothing like Deadman Wonderland or Future Diary.

Yeah, I remember the ones that I happened to see were the first episode (which is fine), "I was stupid so stupid", and episode 10. Episode 10 of Madoka being one of the most amazing, yet heartbreaking.

There is no real dark themes in Watamote, she is just mostly lonely, but ironically she avoids people at the same time. Well perhaps one part, which it all turned out to be something she was misunderstanding on a train, or what she tried to do with a vacuum cleaner.

As an added bonus for talk on Watamote, I will also throw out My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU, it stars a kind of similar unpopular guy, who has given up.

Good call. I agree, SNAFU is pretty much a more upbeat, less extreme Watamote.

I see what you mean about My Teenage Rom-Com SNAFU, Bradleigh, although I found that one easily bearable. I feel like it had to do with the male lead's sense of integrity, which I can respect even though I disagree with the premise on which he bases his philosophy (I mostly disagree, unless you catch me on a rough day).

I've watched several more episodes of Watamote since my last post, and it puts me in mind of the horror of the total confusion that I've experienced in so many social situations. I can see how it could have helped me get some perspective if I had seen it as a teenager.

Just finished the series on crunchyroll and loved it but feel so depressed for Tomoko, really wanted it to have a happier ending for her

I watched some episodes when I felt bad. I didn't feel worse bad afterwards.
