Terminator Woman

Action movie from 1993, set in South Africa. The plot involves a ruthless gangster, a kidnapping, some stolen gold bullion, and two LAPD officers who take every opportunity to display their Kung Fu skills. Not quite as bad as I was expecting. Karen Sheperd is quite impressive in a Cynthia Rothrock type of role.

Interesting

I'd describe it as 'watchable'. If you ever feel the need to check it out, bear in mind that there are two other films with the same title.

The Addams Family (1992 film starring Raul Julia and Angelica Huston)

My NT sister and I will watch one spooky movie every evening for the remainder of this month
even though we began last Thursday.

10/1: Us

10/2: The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari

10/3: The Devil's Backbone

10/4: House of Wax (1954 film)

10/5: The Addams Family (1992 film)

Awesome!

10/6: The Witch and Mystery of the Wax Museum (1933 film that was the origin film for the Vincent Price film that was released in 1954)

10/7: Teeth and Genuine (1920 German silent horror film)

10/8: 28 Days Later and Goke: Snatcher From Hell (Japanese alien horror film)

To be clear, my family and I share different tastes regarding horror films. In fact, my NT sister didn't watch 28 Days Later with me and our mom last night. Instead, she watched Goke in her room and the other night on 10/6 watched Mystery of the Wax Museum instead of The Witch.

10/9: Rigor Mortis (Japanese vampire/martial arts horror film)

10/10: Dracula (1931 film with Bela Lugosi)

10/11: The Cry of the Werewolf

10/12: Ghostbusters (1986 film)

10/13: The Descent (Unrated director's cut)

Blue Rita

How many Jess Franco films can you watch before it does irretrievable damage to your mental health? Luckily I don't have much of that to begin with! This is a typically sleazy and borderline-perverted offering from 1977, based around some kind of lap dancing club, beneath which there's a torture chamber where the dancers imprison their victims, apparently to get information and money from them. There seems to be an espionage-related story in here somewhere as well.

It's the familiar Franco mix of dreadful acting and dialogue, incoherent plot, and naked women all over the set. The potential redeeming factor is that there are some very striking and quite imaginative colour combinations in many of the scenes - it might be interesting to watch them after taking a couple of LSD tabs, if you're so inclined.

Spoiler alert!!{/sarcasm}

This week I watched Sleepy Hollow, which is still quite impressive twenty-one years later. Last weekend I watched the incredible documentary Wigstock, which is about the LGBT drag festival in NYC. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would, they're definitely an incredibly fun and expressive bunch of folks! I really do miss living in a real city. Sometimes I feel like the world around me is literally in black and white [except for the black].... But Chattanooga was planning a Pride fest this year, maybe there's hope for the Tennessee Valley yet! #AsexualAlly

The Machinist

A film from 2004. I don't usually watch stuff made after about 1980, but found this one quite interesting. Reznik, a factory worker, finds his mental state deteriorating alarmingly, and the boundaries between reality and his imaginary world begin to break down. In the end the trauma that has caused all this is revealed, and despite the many clues along the way, I never saw it coming.

Some very striking individual scenes and images here, but maybe the film amounts to less than the sum of its parts. The plot is certainly a bit absurd at times, such as when the hapless Reznik is thrown twenty feet across the road by a car which hits him at fairly high speed, then walks into the nearby police station with just a bit of a limp!

The male lead is Christian Bale - he's unrecognizable as the person who starred in 'American Psycho' just a few years earlier, as he lost over four stones in weight for this role. Never knew he was British before this either. Another actor (actress) I didn't recognize was Anna Massey, who had a prominent part in the controversial film Peeping Tom, though it's hardly surprising, as that was made in 1960.
