The Dame Edna Experience

Dame Edna travesties the chat show formula once again. Guests are Ronald Reagan Jnr, Douglas Fairbanks Jnr, Chubby Checker and Jane Fonda.

Edna to Ronald Jnr, on which of his parents he resembles the most: "I think you're more a Ronnie Boy. You're certainly not a Nancy Boy". Cripes!

Edna to 80-year-old Fairbanks Jnr: "You old swashbuckler! Your swashing days are over, you're starting to buckle a bit these days..."

Some other examples of her 'wit' are not repeatable here, lol.

Astonishing to see 83-year-old Emily Perry, who plays 'Madge Allsop', dancing the twist on stage at the end of the show.

Coronation Street, 5 April 1972

Easter Monday 1972, Ernest Bishop and Emily Nugent get married in church. I recall my cousin, a sophisticated 16 year old female, cracking up with laughter every time Ernie appeared on the screen during this episode. Also Ray Langton proposes to a girl called Vicky - it's a very bizarre, almost surreal scene with a dreamy song playing over the footage. This seems to have been a bit of a thing in the early 70s as seen in films like Play Misty For Me and Hammer's Lust For A Vampire.

Coronation Street, 22 May 1972

An early appearance by Rita Littlewood, who finds comfort and support from Len Fairclough after being physically abused by her boyfriend Harry Bates. She is inaccurately named as 'Rita Bates' in the closing credits. Annie Walker stands her ground in a power struggle with her son Billy, whom the brewery seem to want to replace her with as landlord of The Rover's Return pub.

We see Rita Littlewood in her occasional role as nightclub singer. Len Fairclough, her latest romantic interest, negotiates on her behalf for a better deal from club owner Alec Gilroy, who was to become landlord of the Rovers in the late 1980s.


Coronation Street 14 & 16 August 1972

A peeping tom is at large in the area. Stan Ogden is caught acting suspiciously and is confronted by a number of residents. The 'hawks' such as the horrible Ray Langton and Billy Walker want to deal with Stan themselves, vigilante-style, whereas the 'doves' favour bringing in the police. Eventually another local man is arrested and charged, and Stan is absolved from suspicion.

A pair of tinkers argue about the ownership of Dolores the donkey, and Ray Langton tries to arbitrate. This was surely one of the worst episodes of the decade, and seems to belong more in the 1920s than the 70s. Nonetheless, quite a few YouTube commenters seem to think it's good entertainment.


Coronation Street, 18 October 1972

The Rovers Return takes on The Flying Horse in some sort of 'Pub Olympics'. With the score tied at 2-2 after 4 events, Stan Ogden wins the beer drinking event to secure victory. I think this is the first and only time I've ever seen Stan come out on top, as he was always the Street's perennial loser.

Whilst I may be hard on it for the useless insertion and depiction of Asperger's that goes nowhere, I like the show overall. A couple of my favorite knives are in the show too. Hannibal uses a fully stainless Endura at one point (Italy), there's another Endura used by...one of the tears guy's henchmen, and Dolarhyde uses a serrated Cold Steel Hold Out 3.

It's the opening night of the Capricorn nightclub, owned by bookmaker Benny Lewis. Rita Littlewood has a singing spot, but in mid-performance she is assaulted by a lady in the audience, who suspects Rita is giving her husband the come on.

Christmas concert at the Rovers. Rita Littlewood does her Marlene Dietrich act and Betty Turpin, Maggie Clegg and Bet Lynch are the Andrews Sisters. Emily Bishop is to be Carmen Miranda, and goes to great lengths to acquire some bananas for her headgear, but they fall off as she walks onto the stage!
