Sunday night we watched:

Dune [2021]
<=>"Beyond fear, destiny awaits."




Dune: Part Two [2024]
<=>"Long live the fighters."




Both movies visually awesome.

I hope there are more movies coming in this franchise so the story can be as grand.

I'm all caught up on the Planet of the Apes movies. I watched War For the Planet of the Apes on Saturday.

Clearly the first two standout as being best.

But, I like to watch all of something, not part of something, so I would choose to watch all of them (maybe an attribute of my Autism?) and I would enjoy them (not necessarily equally).

There are rare exceptions for wanting to watch a full set of something due to part being too bad to bear.

And some very good things got so big I avoid them because it is not practical to watch it all. For instance, the MCU is getting too big, I saw that Stargate was getting too big and avoided it (though I like the film).

Exceptions would be Last of the Summer Wine and Doctor Who. I'll gladly take samples from them.

Last night we watched:

Migration [2023]

A duck family had been staying in their happy pond all year round, rather than migrating, because the father duck thinks it is a good place to be so why risk migrating.

But family pressure finally pushes them into the migrating.

When I discovered this film I figured I'd better get it because my bride would almost certainly enjoy it. She did. (And so did I.)

Dune Part 2.

While it also deviated from the book almost as much as Part 1, I admit I liked this better.

lord jim. not having read conrad's book, i still got the feeling that major liberties had to have been taken in getting it to the big screen. orson welles tartly remarked "if i were president of the world, i would put richard brooks in jail for what he did to 'lord jim.'" but just the same, many have remarked that it was basically an unfilmable novel.

I watched the Ichigo Mashimaro OVA. Miu attempts a backflip.

Last night I watched:

Metropolis [1927]

Parts of Metropolis were lost and there has been more than one restoration.
I suspect the copy I watched was the Restored Authorized Edition (2001).
I suspect the trailer above is from a later restoration than the one I watched.

Sigh. Metropolis is considered to be a great film.

I would make a few disclaimers regarding whatever restoration I watched:
- It is a silent film therefore actors clearly overact to try to convey moods.
- The picture had been cropped for a 4:3 aspect ratio for old-school television screens.
- There were visual artifacts hinting they had filmed parts from an old-school television display.
- Picture quality ranged from mediocre to poor...not as good as the trailer above.
And, since what I watched was about 117 minutes long, I know parts were missing.

Allowing for all of that, I thought the Science Fiction was weak.

there is a 4k upconverted, upsampled [frame rate upconverted to 60 frames per second] and colorized version of Metropolis on youtube.

There are multiple restorations of Metropolis available. I don't think the one I watched on Wednesday was a good restoration, it was just the one I hit working through our collection in order. I believe a better restoration is available, even in our collection. I might detour through the good one soon.
