Mother Monster (2013) on Tubi TV
Low budget ($50,000), compelling, but sad (depressing) story. Nothing funny here. It ends with a tiny sliver of hope.
The daughter of a prostitute mother and a drug dealing man ends up with her in laws after her father is killed and mother... I don't remember what happened to her, but she was selfish and cared nothing for her daughter. She teaches her nine year old how to appreciate Vodka.
The in laws, both the aunt and the uncle molested her and abused her as she grew up.
Fast forward. She becomes just like her mother. She only cares about money, being the center of attention, and her vodka. She gets involved with two men. One seems to be a decent man, although I think his money making means are illegal. The other man is cruel, misogynistic, and selfish. She manages to get pregnant by both men at the same time. I didn't think that was possible, but there are things school did not teach me. She has twins, Jake and Majesty. She raises them as boys. They find out otherwise when one gets her period. Her mother says "You're a dumb ass n****" Why did she tell the girls they were male? Because one of the two men that could be the dad was hunting for her and her two boys. No sarcasm about her being a caring mother. There was nothing funny about the story. The mother pimps her daughter out to earn money for food and is resentful that the daughter, Jake, cares more for her sister than her. The two daughters care for each other, but that eventually changes. It is messed up.
Jake finds her real father, and he has a DNA test done with her and her sister. That's how the biological different dads is revealed.
Majesty grows up hateful. When her mom is passed out, she with her girlfriend tie the mother up in the basement. There, Majesty tortures her mother a little every day, reminding her of the abuse she and her sister suffered everyday.
Meanwhile, Jake, with the help of her father, begins to have a peaceful life, and Majesty resents her for it. The guy tells Majesty he will be her dad as well, but she is "Sh**. N**** I don't need your charity" A few scenes later she tells the man that is her biological dad that she is her daughter. His reaction? "I've got problems of my own. You're on your own."
Jake finds her mother in the basement and calls an ambulance. Majesty doesn't understand why her sister cares.
The bulk of the story is told by the mom, who is in a sanitarium (???) talking to a therapist. It's the exposition needed to move the story along. Her story ends saying she does not know what became of Majesty. The girls' dads both died of aides, given to them by the mother.
It ends with Majesty planning to hit back at the people that killed her girlfriend. She is on the phone with her crew, three guys, checking their weapons. She is checking her pistol, and she gets a call. It is a girl she was close to in high school, before she learned she was female. The girl as driven from Texas to Washington D.C. to be with her because she cares. She wants to take her back to Texas. Majesty doesn't understand why she has driven so far to help her. She doesn't believe in this type of caring any more. So we are left with what is Majesty going to do? As I said, there is a sliver of hope.
This is a good movie for the budget. It's told not in a slick '70s way. It's very raw. It's honest. Despite the subject matter, there is no taking of drugs. Drugs are never seen, other than vodka. There is no nudity, and no sex scenes. It is brutal without ever showing graphic brutality. I have no idea what the rating is. The sound is not Hollywood sound quality. It's indie low budget quality. It could be PG-13 or it could be R. It could depend on where you're from.
