I've noticed something really weird recently: men's butts are all over tv. It's funny to show a man's naked butt on tv. Even children's cartoons do this. A man's butt is a joke. But if you show a woman's butt, it becomes pornography and only channels like HBO will show it. Why is this?

in America, there is that Calvinist puritanical heritage to work against. the same pattern emerged in the early days when the Hollywood Hays office finally was on the way out- for example, the Hays office censors ok'ed the bare butts of Charleton Heston and his 2 fellow actors in "Planet of the Apes," [1967] but they vetoed a later scene in the movie that would have featured bare female buttocks and breasts. male buttocks are not judged a prurient thing as women's buttocks are, in the dominant hetero culture here.

Same thing that happens when one shows men's boobs vs women's boobs.

Even in movies rated R and NC17, a man's penis can and has been shown, but I can't recall anything with a woman's vagina on display, other than a triangle of pubic hair.

Hollywood, perhaps wisely, left the explicitness to the unrated crowd, or the home video crowd. in other countries, they have been known to censor the movie by re-editing it so the midsection is removed, via the optical printer.

In the original Emanuelle, they showed a woman smoking a cigarette out of her vajayjay

I hope she never got cancer. but emanuelle was never rated by the MPAA CARA, it was self-rated. nothing out of Hollywood is gonna be explicit, at least through the filter of the MPAA.

I presume that's a movie. I also presume it wasn't American made. Am I right?

Okay, no American movie outside the porn industry would be so bold.

Well, Italian horror movie maker, Dario Argento, gives us a run for our money when it comes to violence and gore.

in the hays office days, gore was expressly forbidden in American movies, so it was the rest of the world who could show their audiences blood and gore that americans were judged not suitable to view.

So I guess we Americans have been going out of our way to make up for lost time.

but I guess we are still hamstrung by our modern form of the Hays Office, called the CARA [Code And Rating Administration, of the MPAA] which uses economic forces to censor movies. "Total Recall" woulda been a LOT ruder were it not for the threat of withholding a rating or giving it an NC17.

The original Total Recall, or the remake?
