Do you think people can learn right from wrong from the media (i.e. plot lines from sitcoms, getting-to-know segments on game shows? This had me thinking because technology has figuratively absolutely ruined the intellect of some children these days.

Intellect has nothing to do with moral values.

Yes, but it's best to use good judgement. A large chunk of modern media exists purely for the sake of entertainment. Now it's all fine to be going about blowing things up in a videogame or watching a movie where a person steals things and gets into car chases and all, but those are things most of us know it'd be best not to do in real life. ('most of us'- An exception would be the fourteen-year-old wrestling fan who strangled a kid, but those sort of people are in the minority. It is an issue that needs to be looked into, tho').
I personally think it's stupid to get into a big fuss about 'Oh, the media these days is corrupting our kids with s*x and violence' when a thousand and so years ago the Greeks were telling stories about Gods cannibalizing each other, commiting adultery, and chopping each other up. Storytelling has always been rife with tales that showed the heroes doing the sort of things that most cultures wouldn't consider entirely moral.

I sometimes wonder how we continue to function at all. Even the "serious" media are getting into a few wierd positions. The media in the UK at the moment are saying all sorts of contradictory things about Muslims. They play to two camps, the throw them outs and the leave them alones. Anyone with a genuine interest in the subject will have a very hard time getting information that is value free to any extent. As to whether taking values from other programs is good bad or indifferent, I don't know how effective it is as a means of passing values, there seem to be contradictory reports every other month.

I thought intellect had something to do with moral values, Yupa, I'm sorry. Now, I'm beginning to believe that this was a pointless poll question after all. Television does exist for entertainment, unless, of course you don't count "Sesame Street" or "The Price is Right" for example. Now, a lot of reality TV shows exist, and if you really understand the purpose of the ongoing cast of contestants and what they are trying to do, you would realize the purpose of it is ridiculous.

It is too late for me to delete that poll now. Oh, well, vote in it if you so desire.

I understand. There really wasn't much of a point in that poll question.

Moral values are eether allreddy there, or there not. TV has nothing to do with that. You mite heer about an idia on TV, mabey, and agree with it, but it has to allreddy fit in with your own moral values.

There is POTENTIAL for the media to teach morals, so people CAN. However, they can also skew their moral compasses from the media. Of course both effects are pretty mild; what happens in your life outside of watching TV/media is what matters most in your morality IMO.

So, if nobody can trust it, it wouldn't make sense. Now, I'm understanding your point of view, Rose. Real life teaches you a lot. That must be how people learn the hard way. To some people, like you, I guess it means nothing. What we go through moment by moment in our life matters.

I don't even know what the ---- you were trying to say there. What are you saying means nothing to me? I don't believe that people should only live "in the moment" either.

Don't I get a say in this? Rose is not my real name, but one of my many pseudonyms. Don't try to be "smart." Just go by the name I'm given here. I hate my real name, and I go by so many other ones that there is no need to call me by anything except what I'm called here. I can tell you're talking about me easier if you do, especially if you quote me. It doesn't make you seem familiar to me to call me by what you think is my real name. It makes you seem like you're trying to show off- or piss me off.

It's not your fault; you had no way of knowing that the information you were being given was inaccurate.
