The Body Tree.

When a group of American friends travel to Siberia for the funeral of a Russian female friend who was murdered allegedly by another friend now in prison, they learn that the remaining family conducting a funeral ceremony in order to find the real killer they think is now present. Not a bad horror flick for such a low budget.

I haven't watched a movie in a while and I just finished The Endless (2018)

It's a story of a couple of brothers that are in a movie together doing things. Pretty good not great.

p.s. I was in a cult when I was younger so I was curious.

Not bad. Same with Summer Stock.

The Monkey's Paw.

Presumably taking place long after the classic story, a factory worker in Louisiana has the chances to make wishes that all have a price along with them. Not nearly as good as the story.

That Summer (1979)

Wouldn't usually want to watch anything with Ray Winstone in it, but this is worth it just for the soundtrack, featuring British chart music from 78/79. Winstone's character is actually quite likeable, and I was rooting for him towards the end of the film.

I’m pretty sure the three most recent were ‘A Silent Voice’(alternatively ‘The shape of voice’, which I prefer), ‘Your Name’, and ‘If cats disappeared from the world’. All relatively foreign, but only the last has yet to get any official release outside Japan so far as I’m aware - though I’ve heard an English translation of the book it’s based on is in the works.

A Silent Voice - I don’t quite recall how I’d heard of it, think I just found it on YouTube and decided to try it out. Very surprising how relatable it was, so much that I decided to buy the manga. Shorter than I thought it would be but it gave a bit more context. That being said, I’m undecided which is actually better. The movie has great direction, music, acting, pacing, that would have been a little bogged down by all the interesting details the manga had. Either way, although it does not deal with exactly the same issue, I feel it would be very useful for those on the spectrum who have problems with communication, with understanding how there are plenty of grey areas and not everyone is just trying to be mean to us.

Your Name - heard of it in relevance to the previous movie, of which it competed with for sales, and seemed to come out on top. It has the benefit of being an original work I guess. It’s a fun journey and the art and animation are nice, but beyond that, some of it feels a bit convoluted, and it’s really not terribly deep. Just your average love story with some freaky friday thrown in the mix.

If cats disappeared from the world - possibly has taken a place as one of my favorite films, even before seeing the “official” English translation that was made for whatever reason. Suggested to me by a Japanese friend that I practice with, I couldn’t be happier to be able to have shared something like this with her. Anyway, the plot isn’t very complicated in itself, and it’s not exactly innovative for dealing with the theme of mortality and materialism, but I do think it’s one of the more nuanced ones, and has plenty of heart put into it. Love the pacing as well as the characters and acting, as well as the music despite being such a small selection. I’d recommend it but I don’t know whether finding it for free would be easy, and getting a region free DVD player just for the official release alone may be too expensive for some. Maybe just look forward to the book.

turning to ashes flowers in their fields,
silenced the birds in the trees.

Deliverance - This was my first time seeing it all the way through. Previously, I'd watched part of it on TV which, of course, was edited.

A Quiet Place - The monster effect was really well done in this film. I'm glad the father, who liked to shove religion down his kids' throats, got his just deserts.
