Secret Window

A Stephen King thriller starring Johnny Depp. IMDb says the movie cost $40M to make. To me it looked like a $5M production. I'm guessing the other $35M went into Johnny Depp's pocket. Still, the movie was average and not one of Stephen King's best.

And they did Crazy Rich Asians on just $30M! I watched it again to enjoy the cultural references that I grew up with but hadn't seen in a couple decades.

Is that the one with a young Hilary Swank?

Brawl in Cell Block 99

A crime thriller starring Vince Vaughan as a drug courier who gets sent to prison. I liked this film. It was pretty intense with some brutally graphic scenes thrown in for good measure.

the movie rating website Rotten Tomatoes gave it an 86% audience approval. I liked it, it was a pleasant diversion without much in the way of disturbing content.

The Great Wall

I liked it. You can tell a lot of work went into the production. I'm probably biased here because the version I saw on my 55" TV was an HDR version so the colors, light, saturation, everything was fantastic.

Scream Blacula, Scream!

When a voodoo priestess dies without naming her son her heir, he seeks the help of a witch doctor who brings Blacula back to life. While William Marshall in the title role is a magnificent actor, this movie pretty well sucked.

I want to see that.

Gehena.

A group working for a company wanting to build a hotel resort in a remote area of the Philippines (against the outrage of the local people) explore a WWII Japanese bunker. Only after when they are trapped there do they realize that the bunker was built on a preexisting native underground labyrinth which is haunted by those trapped in time for their sins. Worse, as madness overtakes the group, and they start killing one another, it becomes clear that the only escape is through death, while the survivor faces damnation of spending an eternity in the darkness with the rest of the damned.
While this movie had gotten a lousy rating, I thought it was a rather good horror flick.

Crazy Rich Asians

A brilliant rom-com worthy of its status of being one of the "surprise hits" of 2018 in part to using the "old-school" formula for rom-coms to its advantage.

Looking forward to the sequel!
