I just saw Fate/stay night [Heaven's Feel] 2.lost butterfly at the cinema. I loved it. So far it's been a fantastic adaptation, with many improvements to the original. The creators aren't afraid to change the structure of the narrative or how scenes play out in service of the film, rather than slavishly following the original, and it's to the film's credit.

Every frame of animation looks like it cost a ton, with fluid action and some creative shot composition. It has what'll probably be the best animated fight scene of the year - even if the fights are overly reliant on the trope in which every punch causes an explosion and the receiving person gets knocked back a hundred metres.

They nailed the big moments and the darker tone of the route, and they improved on the original's exploration of the characters' sexuality, mostly by not being coy, yet not venturing into exploitation like the original. Like the first film, it does a great job at building up and having you invested into its characters - at least for the main ones. Some of the lesser roles, such as Ilya feel less developed to the point where non-VN readers might find them more fickle than they are. There's still some of the series' trademark hokey pseudo-profound dialogue, but it's kept to a minimum.

The film's only major problem is that it's the middle part of a story that really doesn't have natural points to build big climaxes on, at the intervals that would make sense given the division into three films. It just sort of ends, neither on the end of what feels like a three act structure nor a cliffhanger.

And of course there is a lot of smaller detail lost such as internal character dialogue, and though there are references to the lore it never goes into much depth. There's a lack of exposition, which is both good and bad - it improves the pacing considerably, but events and actions have less context.

Now just another year until we get the final film, hopefully. I'm looking forward to it.

It was boring. Too much cgi.

...I guess I didn't mention seeing the CGI animated movie WONDER PARK in a theater. It was OK, though reviews I read (NYTimes and Roger Ebert.com) weren't ecstatic - it's going to be a TV series on Nickelodeon, so,, if you have regular access to TV, and cable at that (I don't :( )...

I loved it. It's one of the best recent horror movies, in my opinion. There were times I was genuinely unsettled, and not many films succeed at that.

I haven't read the book yet, but I'm willing to bet the movie is every bit as good as.

It sure is and IMO, one of the best Stephen King adaptations.
