just saw it and i am sooo impressed. it doesn't look like sf to me. it is purely human movie, dealing with human emotions and problems. even aliens behave like humans, some of them violent, some loving and understanding.
actually reminds me of a civil war that i witnessed (not from that close, thank god).
i guess that is what it makes it a good movie, it is talking about human issues. and these are not my favorite issues thus i would still prefer softer setting.

ah resources, when is it going to be enough,,,

I remember coming across a couple discussions about it showing the Nigerians in a racial manner. Well if anything there a lot of positive Nigerians in the movie, such as in the truth of MNU was uncovered by a dark man, the white people were posted very negativly aswell, even Wikus was abit of a tool. And if you think that such witchcraft is not used anymore then I wonder if you have heard about albino magic, to this day it has been known that in some areas Nigerian albinos have been know to be hunted down for there bodies apparent magical properties. I doubt the movie showed everything, the look we mostly got of the alens was what the cameras wanted to show as a negative view and the gangsters chose to move in there just to take advantage, just like the MNU did.

I'm a South African, and the one thing this film has tought me is how the other side of racist/apartheid is treated and how they are viewed.

Ok not clear, I liked in this film that you could see the world both from the Prawns and the human's side. Also this did not just happen in apartheid, it happened in WW2, anywhere were race/religion is a factor for mistreating someone. So this film really shows us humans for how cruel we can be and shoul be a wake up call for all of us in saying how am i treating this person. Especially modern day blacks who still use apartheid for all their rules and reason for Afirmative action and Black Economic Empowerment. I'm not a racist.

I loved the South African skyline, finally a film with a place I know. My only big problem in the film is the swearing. I'm not a big fan of swearing and in this film a lot of Afrikaans swearword were used.

Yes lots of swearing which I liked as it made it seem more real. I think it's less about racism in south africa/appartheid and more about difference/bigotry in general they're just using the backdrop of Johannesburg to make it really clear what the film is about and to show the ironical situation of black south africans doing exactly what was done to them. How humans of any colour will unite in bigotry against something even more different. The bit where you start hating the humans is really weird I must say as at the beginning you completely feel the for the human's disgust at the aliens.

Truly the best film I've seen in a long time, wasn't expecting it to be as moving as it was. The main protagonist is easily the most complex and real movie character I can remember, he's a total unlikeable arse for most of the movie but by the end you're very much on his side.

As an interesting note did you know that a lot of the dialouge was improvised, for instance all the scenes where Wikus is asking the Prawns to sign the conviction notices were all improvisation of the actors of Wikus and the guy who played the aliens. This may be why he was stuttering so much so it kind of felt like a more realistick of a real person trying to explain to a camera, also all the talking parts of the aliens were an improvisation of the alien's actor aswell.

I watched District 9 a few weeks ago, and thought it very dark, bleak, gory and depressing. That being said, it was quite good. Kind of Alien Nation meets The Quatermass Experiment.

I haven't heard that many South African accents, other than The Goodies episode South Africa (one of my favourites for savaging apartheid), the Doctor Who story The Sontaran Experiment ('Whet are you ep to, yer lump of feelth?'), Alexei Sayle's turn as a South African vampire in The Young Ones episode Nasty, and Yahtzee's cod accent in his Zero Punctuation review of Far Cry 2. Wikus sounded like he had learned a good chunk of his English in India, though.

This movie was very good, although a little bloody for my liking.

The ending screamed "Sequel!"

The cinematography kept it real and intimate.

Excelent movie! For the first time the Aliens aren't superior beings, goods or bads, but they are poor, and aparted of the society.
Johanesburgo was the best place to this film, especially because D9 is a alegorian of south african apartheid.

The second time. -Alien Nation- had a similar premise.

Using no-name actors to play the characters was genius.

The $25 million used to make D9 was very well spent.
