I always thought he was a know it all who couldn't help anyone with real problems. He looks good on TV because unlike a real therapist, he has an army of staffers who can choose guests that will make him look good.

I read an article about him on Wikipedia that said he was accused of ethics violations in Texas, but he surrendered his license to practice so no action was taken against him. He gets away with doing it on TV because the show is classified as "entertainment."

It bothers me also that he has millions of followers who will do anything he says. Even some scam artists made a lot of money selling sessions with Dr. Phil over the phone that never materialized until they were caught up with.

People like him scare me.

Y'know, I've never heard him talk. Ever, that I know of. I heard the hype from others about him and knew I should avoid him. Anytime I hear a lot about some so-and-so rabbitting on about fixing everyone else, especially on daytime TV, especially ESPECIALLY promoted by Oprah Winfrey (she gave him a plug at some point, right?), I know to stay away.

These pop culture gurus give me a swift pain. They have more power than any mortal is entitled to have, for far too little merit. The annoyance I feel from their personal qualities is only surpassed by the irritation I feel at hearing people discuss them as if they were worthy of the effort. These are the same sort of who hold conversations about reality TV, who care that a judge is being replaced on American Idol, and who have a distinct likelihood of handing their friends and family over to "What Not to Wear."
