If you couldn't get through the movie "A Clockwork Orange" you might try having a look at the book. It is not very long, but it can be a little tricky to digest because of all the russian word use. It is very fun if you like that sort of language play though. The story and movie are certainly not for everyone, but the whole point is to bring the violent nature of human beings into question in my opinion. That is why I love the story. I think the movie is a great piece of work as well.
Kubrick is probably my favorite.
