I think I'll rewatch Meet John Doe tonight actually. I watched It Happened One Night the other day. It has such domineering male subtext to it, like when Gable spanks her, which is all Hayes Code driven.

The Hayes Code was the best thing that ever happened to romantic comedy because it forced the writers to become creative with their innuendo.

Now days they just have sex.

Hear, hear! And more people have been unable to understand why I have a problem with this. I've pointed out to them that I don't want to see that... I don't consider it my business to watch two strangers in their most intimate moments. One of the sexiest moments I've seen on film was from Hobson's Choice, where the rather uptight British couple was heading nervously into the bedroom one by one on their wedding night, and then you saw them the next morning acting decidedly differently toward one another. He said simply, "By gum!" but the way he said it... dude. You knew it went well.

It Happened One Night really was one long innuendo, wasn't it? In a good way. Though I still dunno how that chicken leg of hers ever stopped a car. But then, that's not really my line.
