I would have to agree with a few of the posters here and say Phantom of the opera. Filmed in 2004 at Pinewood studios, Buckinghamshire, it is visually stunning and the story line is good and easy to follow... except for that little bit at the beginning... You might want to check the synopsis on Wikipedia or something for that! In the UK it is £7.00 at HMV and comes with a 'making of' DVD as well. Seriously, I hate those things usually, but this one had me wide eyed with wonder!
I would definately recommend How to train your dragon as a good film. It is currenltly showing at a cinema near you (couldn't resist!) but will be out later this year on DVD. I will be buying it.
Other films I have watched recently that I thought I wouldn't like but actually ended up loving were:
Evita (although it can be a bit confusing)
Happy Gilmore: VERY funny
Girl Interupted: about a woman with Borderline Personality Disorder (based on a true story)
First do no harm: a lesser known movie about a child who develops epilepsy and goes on the ketogenic diet.
There are many others too, I'll post them if I remember them!

I remember that movie! I haven't watched it in a while, but it's a very good movie.
