Would you watch a dubbed French film?

Subs for me.

subs. Mainly because it's what I'm used to. Truth be told I'd even prefer to watch something in English with subtitles, I find it more engaging for some reason. I took Japanese for a few years back in HS, although I'm not going to pretend that's the reason I prefer to watch anime in Japanese.


It also bothers me when the voices don't match perfectly with the animation, which I've seen with a bunch of dubs(I mean literally, not as in with the theme) it just feels like a farce. It disrupts my immersion in the universe.

They invariably have to mess with the translated script to make it match the mouths. Sometimes having to exaggerate or underplay certain words/clauses that otherwise wouldn't be exaggerated/underplayed, which messes with the mood.


In short, there are just too many damn things that tend to go wrong in translation that screw up the presentation.

In general i do watch Subbed anime, but ocasionaly there is a good dubb.
It realy varies alott from anime to anime, dubber to dubber.
I sugest that if you find a new anime with both sub and dub, you watch the first episode first with subs and original voices, and hten check the dubb and decide from that

I can't deal with dubbing. I spend the whole time watching the actor's mouth to see where it matches up to the voice and where it doesn't.

I prefer subs, even in English. I used to constantly put the closed captioning on TV shows back home because I could "feel" the story better being able to both hear AND read it. At first my dad was like "WTF are you doing? Turn that off. It's blocking the picture." But now my parents both do it

I prefer subtitles.

i enjoy dubs. i find it easier to get in to a show when i dont have to worry about reading the subs.

I prefer to watch anime in japanese WITHOUT subtitles.

But if that choice is not available, then having subtitles is better than English dubs. Because in the English dubbed anime, the acting is generally god-awful. Even on the better anime movies, English dubbing has never really been good quality.

Subs are better. The pacing of scenes is built around the original dialogue, whereas dubbed dialogue has to be built around the extant scene, resulting in the dubbed dialogue sounding stilted and wrong.

Subtitles, by a long-shot. Maybe its because I'm used to them, often watching things in languages I understand with them on. But I really hate dubs.

Not to mention dubs usually use the most singularly irritating American voices one can hear.

Subtitles are better. Dubs have different dialogue. I'd want to know the original dialogue.

Although actually there are quite a few times when the subtitles do not match the dialogue either -- less than there are with English language dubs.

(I say English language because essentially all animation voices are dubbed... although the original Japanese is of course better.)

A lot of the time the reason why the acting is so bad in English language anime is that they seem to be trying to copy the original Japanese intonations, and of course this doesn't work ~ Japanese and English are two very different languages in that regard and the results are just odd. Not to mention that the voices of the American actors are so tacky and bad and generally caustically annoying.

Subtitled or not, Japanese language makes for far better quality anime. Besides which, the production values are often better (even when they are not great) because the Japanese voice actors are working with the original film-makers / animators. It's more cohesive that way -- noticeably so.

Sub, obviously. I actually detest the American voice actor dubbing of most anime. The only one I can stand being dubbed is Deathnote. Most of the time they don't translate properly and always seem to censor everything to make it more marketable to children. It actually makes me angry and want to rant badly . The same goes for poorly translated, highly censored, marketable manga. If you can read or are not dyslexic I believe you should be subbing it online, and not via US/ UK distributed dvd. There is so much more to see.

But hey, that's just me.

They can have equally annoying if not even more annoying voices in Japanese.

For me, it depends on the anime, but really, I prefer to read manga rather than anime. Animation means movement. Most of the time, no one is moving! They're standing still talking with a mouthflap or making noises.

Subtitles. You lose the original performance if you get it dubbed.

Except under extraordinary circumstances, SUBS ALWAYS. Most dubs sound horrible to me. This is quadruply true of anime dubs, which, in their ham-handedness, remind me of a stilted imitation of five-year-olds pitting their action figures against each other, sound effects served with a generous side of kid spittle. That's what I thought when I heard the Evangelion dub, anyway. Others have been, well, just as bad; there's no point in further description.

I... don't like dubs. You're free to, but I won't pretend to understand (unless you're dyslexic.) I know there are arguments this way and that, but when it comes down to it, some things just sound awful to me.

So yeah. This post isn't meant to offend dub-lovers; one person's cacophonous noise-puke is another's heavenly symphony and all that. I'm just explaining how it is for me. No age-old flame war, no hating here.
