all of them are amazing films.

but the one film that i think really stands out among his work and shows that kubrick really dared to be controversial and break the rules, is lolita from 1962.

the topic at hand and and the story in the original book, were (and still are) absolutely not political correct. so making an acceptable screenplay and then shoot a film worthwhile viewing, is certainly a daunting task against all odds, if one doesn't want it to be perceived as just some kind of kinky-bad-erotic-illegal-child-molesting-soft-pornish-B-film movie.

he balanced it all very skillful.

In order of preference:

"Dr. Strangelove"

"A Clockwork Orange"

"2001 A Space Odyssey"

The films that I could either take or leave:

"Full Metal Jacket" Well made in many ways, but a lot of bother for a relatively simplistic point in the end.

"Eyes Wide Shut" Again, some good stuff, but it took an awful lot of time and story telling to get to the point he was going for.

"Lolita" Didn't particularly like it, but mostly because I really don't like James Mason.

There are a few that I actively dislike:

"The Shinning" I really don't know why anyone likes this terrible film.

"Spartacus" Long, slow and boring. And I like Tarkovsky films so that's saying something.

"Barry Lyndon" Saw it a long time ago and didn't like it. I'll probably give it another shot and see if my tastes have changed.

Haven't seen "Paths of Glory" but am looking forward to the Criterion Blu-Ray. I might have seen "The Killing" but if I have, I can't remember it.

Stanley Kubrick is my all-time favorite film-maker as well.

If I had to choose a favorite, I would have to say it's The Shining simply because it's the one that I have watched the most times (probably about fifty times). I've pretty much deciphered a lot of the symbolism and the hidden narratives of the film. Recently I found the actual soundtrack at a horror convention here in Los Angeles, and it's a masterpiece of scary music.

A Clockwork Orange comes in a close second to The Shining.

But IMHO he still never made anything as good as Star Wars :)

That amuses me! Though I do like the original Star Wars films. :)

Barry Lyndon. Watching that film was one of the most powerful artistic experiences of my life.
Second place would go to Lolita, third place to A Clockwork Orange.

Kubrick is my favorite director as well. Reading about the theories that he had asperger gave me a lot of hope that an aspie can become a movie director.
The shining was the first kubrick film i saw so its my second favorite. I think his best film as well as one of the best films ever is 2001. He reinvented the cinematic language in that film and i see new things in it everytime.

'Barry Lyndon' is an incredible piece of work, but my personal favorite goes to either 'The Shining' or 'Eyes Wide Shut' depending on my mood.

Stanley Kubick is the Director whom other Directors watch his films just to dissect and analyze. My favorite anecdote: (don't know if it's true, but its recited in a video of actors who admired him) he was on a set after everybody came back from lunch, and told the Cinematographer "the lighting is off 1/8 of an f stop." The Cinematographer asked all of the lighting crew if they had changed anything, and they all said no. He went back to Stanley and said that. Stanley responded, "check it with your meter." He pulled out his meter and sure enough the lighting was off 1/8 of an f stop. He was that great of a perfectionist ! !! One of the great things to look at in every one of his movies is what he does with light. Not every scene, of course, but you'll see where he used something like the light coming through windows to a dramatic effect.
I haven't seen his very early films, and when I sat down to watch "Lolita" I just couldn't get with it. I also haven't seen "Barry Lyndon" or "Eyes Wide Shut, or "Paths of Glory."
It's really difficult to pick a favorite. Each of his films has something that just appeals to me.

Here's a link to a compilation of scenes from his films that is SO WELL DONE. it'll make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RECC4arqQow

My favorite is The Shinning. I know, I know, a lot of people don't like Kubrick's work in this film, but I like it.
