John Coffey in the Green Mile (that movie also contains my most shocking movie death; Edward Dalaquar's execution)

Agreed, but it is Edward Delacroix, not Dalaquar.

OHH!! !!

Sorry, I'm just pedantic, and I've read the original novel enough times to know how its spelt.

Well, in the TV thread, a lot of people have mentioned the death of Amber on House, but said it was only because of Wilson that they were sad. Well, "Wilson" made me a lot sadder when he was in Dead Poet's Society and his character killed himself.

I'm sure I'll think of others later.

Maximus in Gladiator ... yeah I know I guess it should be somewhat a happy moment since he's joining his wife and son but still :(

And any movie where the dog or cat dies.

SPOILER ALERT

I'm a big fan of war movies, and I can think of two deaths that stood out to me:

1) Pvt. "Gomer Pyle" Lawrence (Vincent D'Onofrio) from Full Metal Jacket - Of course, the shock of how graphically and suddenly his death is depicted was the first thing that hit me when I first saw it. After the initial shock, though, once I had reflected upon it, I realized it's really quite sad. Throughout the entire Parris Island training sequence, it's obvious how much Pvt. Pyle is suffering, even though he's trying to shape up (it was really hard for me to watch the blanket party scene in particular; it's really brutal). And then, to be driven so far down the spiral that Pyle saw suicide as his only option--well, it really resonated with me, particularly since I have firsthand experience being an outcast.

2) Sgt. Elias (Willem Dafoe) from Platoon - What can I say? It's one of those epic emotional cinematic death scenes.

Green mile, marley and me, & the death of Dobby all made me cry.

Also when Will Smith's dog dies in Legend was very very sad.

But the saddest film for me is Watership Down when the rabbits die. Makes me upset just thinking about it

I can NOT believe I forgot these, from Lord of the Rings...

Gandalf the Grey! Oh, I know, he didn't really die... exactly... sort of... Boromir's was sadder, naturally, though it had its nobility... but the part after when they all were weeping... pitiful. Especially Pippin, who just fell down and sobbed. Awww...

And, "though this was TOTALLY made up", Haldir at Helm's Deep "where the elves never were"... sorry, sorry, I have regained control over my inner nerd, who is now sulking in a corner muttering, "What's it doing? It ruins it! Never sent the fat hobbit away, no he didn't, precious, gollum, gollum! Nor never rode with the nasssty elf lady neither!" As I was saying, Haldir's death was quite sad.

Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun Fat) in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

And, ok, I know it wasn't exactly a death, but when Han Solo gets frozen in the Carbonite...

Ive said it before, and I wil say it again, the last scenes in "Dancer in the Dark", when Bjorks character is executed.

Now Ive posted it below, but please dont watch it if you havnt seen the film yet, it will really spoil the film for you, its really worth watching if you like intense sad self sacrificing emotion.

The death of Sol Roth (played by Edward G. Robinson) in -Soylent Green-. It so happens Robinson was dying and Soylent was his last movie. In the scene Sol Roth realizes that the oceans are dying all hope is lost for earth. He goes to a facility for voluntary suicide. His friend Thorne (played by Charlton Heston) finds him there. Part of the death is to see the Earth as it was before it was environmentally ruined. Thorne realizes that all the stories that old Sol was telling him about how things used to be are true.

This scene still give me a lump in the throat every time I see it.
