SGU was doomed from the start. The cast of characters was weak, their script was weak,the never ending melodrama and re-writing of SG1&SGA episodes into SGU shows the series was quickly patched together just to squeeze more cash from the SG franchise.
As for new shows...
Babylon 5 is rather good.. just remember that the entire story from the first to last season was written before they started filming the first episode of the first season. The first season is rather weak in story but 2nd season onwards the characters really pick up pace.
LEXX is another great series. Its WEIRD and fun to watch. It earned a place on the hall of fame for its episode 'Brigadoom' which was made as a small opera piece for the audience.
Earth: Above and Beyond was fun...

If you're into anime there are three scif-fi 'heavy' shows called Starship Operators, Crest/Banner of the Stars and Irresponsible Captain Tylor (this last one is a comedy but it has incredible starship combat stuff).
