Nineteen Eighty-Four, the version with John Hurt and Richard Burton. Very depressing, especially at the end.

Oh, and District 9. That movie can make you lose your faith in humanity.

You've gotta be kidding about District 9. District 9 was epic, but didn't seem that depress except for the man that was transforming into an alien.

The Green Mile was depressing due to how the man who "helped" others died in the end.

Road to Perdition was depressing, but good. The only things depressing about the film is when the protagonist's wife and 2nd son was killed, when he had to kill his "father", and when he dies after getting killed by an assassin.

So you missed all the stuff about the horrible way the aliens were treated by the humans?

Yeah, I forgot to mention that, also how the transformation affected his wife, and how it motivated MNU or whatever the organization is called to go after killing aliens and trying to kill the Wirkus.

Ken Russell's The Devils

The Conqueror Worm

i would add the recent Melancholia by von Trier just for parity, but it has moments that made me burst out laughing despite the fact that (spoiler alert) it's about the end of the world

"the butterfly effect" would have to top the list of downer movies. "the last boy scout" was also very depressing in addition to being totally foul. "donnie darko" [in addition to being almost totally opaque] was no happy time, either.

It's interesting that you should mention this as the BBFC (UK film censorship board) are hosting a 100 years of film censorship bash at the National Film Theatre in London. The Devils famously had a hell of a time with the BBFC and the distributor, Warner Home Video, to this day have the original uncut edition of this film but refuse to release it, not even to celebrate the BBFC's centenary anniversary. The most complete version is the original UK cinema version that was pre-cut for a UK 'X' certificate back in 1971.

the 1968 cliff robertson oscar winner "charly" had an ending that was leavened by the fact that the viewer has no way of knowing if he remembered what he was for a too-short while.

I don't think I've ever wanted a movie to just end quite so much as watching the director's cut of Brazil. I remember reading somewhere that Gilliam pitched it as 1984 and 1/2, and that's exactly what the movie is. One of my uncles loves the film, claims it's uplifting even.

For a documentary series 'The First Australians' is a sad watch indeed

speaking of the first australians i cant believe i didnt mention rabbit proof fence. it's about a family from the stolen generation and unfortunately it's based on a true story. this crap actually happened. real life is worse than anything we could ever invent sometimes.
