I've never seen a DVD commit suicide. I can't say the same about VHS.

As for Video i prefer DVD (mpg 2 video)
VHS: I think it can only display 640x480 might not even be that
DVD: I think i can display up to 1024x768 possibly higher
and of course you have those extra goodies subtitles camera angles ect:

Audio: DVD 16-bit 48khz
and sometimes i think 192khz 24-bit

VHS: muffle muffle muffle muffle!! !

But until prices come down for DVD recorders. VHS will still be my choice for recording off tv.

Over the next few weeks I may rescind my vote...I just got a LaserDisc player! Actual LaserDiscs to follow.

VHS would look a LOT better if the S-VHS standard caught on. Unfortunatley, there's not many pre-recorded material in S-VHS, so it's remained a professional format for shooting camcorder footage and editing. S-VHS looks awesome and approaches DVD signal quality. What's even better about it is that there's not any pixellation and compression artifacts in rapid movement like in DVD's. S-VHS though still has the wear issues that are the problem with standard VHS tapes
