I remember seeing a bit of one of the episodes of the newer cartoon(hell they may have even gotten rid of that, don't know as I haven't checked). But yeah it was like a mockery of the original so I decided to stick with the old and never even saw the newer movie that came out, as I figured it would not be based on the old ones.

The new one is in no way a mockery of the original. I admit, the first time I saw it I wasn't happy to hear "turtle power" in the theme song, because it seemed like they were just stealing something that belongs to the original and should be able to be associated with that and not the new one. But as I kept watching, I realized they only did that because they're fans of it too. The show has a lot of references to the original and it's always fun when one comes up, especially when it's not expected.
Like the 2003 series, it can be darker and more serious than the original cartoon but that fits in with the comic books, where the whole franchise originated from. But it can also be good for a laugh.

If you want a mockery of the original 1987 series, just watch the 2009 'Turtles Forever' movie. Argue that it's "affectionate parody" all you want, it outright spits on the original series and I absolutely stand with all the fans who were pissed off by it.

Well, I'm a fan who absolutely loved Turtles Forever

I felt betrayed by it. On paper, I get the concept of contrasting the goofier, lighthearted '87 Turtles against the darker '03 Turtles, but it was less of a parody and more of an extreme, unrealistic exaggeration which depicted all of the '87 characters as completely ineffectual and physically weak buffoons, especially Shredder. The actual '87 Turtles weren't even remotely like the ones in 'Turtles Forever', and thus the attitude I got from it was less "homage" and more condescending, in a "look how much superior our ('03) series is because we're much darker and edgier!" way.

To be fair, there was a lot of good stuff in 'Turtles Forever' and the treatment of the '87 Turtles is really the only truly contentious part of it which divided a lot of fans. However, me being a devotee of the '87 series, it's enough to make me side on the end of "dislike".

The old show and the comics had the roughly the same story for the first few episodes of the tv-show from what I have read.

Ah, thank you for clarifying that. Now I understand so much better why you and other fans don't like it. I never saw it that way, despite loving the '87 Turtles.

Yeah, the old cartoons were pretty silly. But in a fun way, usually. I remember the Rat King, who was a homeless man living in the sewers with the ability to control rats.

...Yes , the original Mirage Studios comic books from the 80s , which I assume you mean , were more " older audience "-oriented comic books and the concept was simplified and made " nicer " & " more suitable for kids (& more obviously merchandisable points added for the cartoon , too , I suppose) when the TV show was developed , then , in fact , after the cartoon show , a different comic book publisher published " lighter " TMNT comic books at the same time that followed the TV show's approach !
