I hope its not that barrier-induced god transformation story again. It is basically a recycling of an old plot. There was even an underground fan-made episode about a re-imagined Gary Mitchell into the future story line, which you probably know about already?
I'm just looking at the revised timeline. All the stuff that happened before the
Narada attacked the
Kelvin should not have been affected; thus, there's a cosmic barrier at the edge of the galaxy (or at least the part the
Enterprise visited in "Where No Man..." - author Diane Duane has suggested it was in fact just in that one spot), which was struck by an earlier Earth-based exploration vessel, which self-destructed when one of the crewmen went all god-wannabe. Now that the Klingon fleet has been so badly damaged by Nero's escape from Rura Penthe (as outlined in some barely-heard background dialog in the movie), Starfleet should have the resources available to send a ship to find out what happened to their missing explorers...
As for finding the
Botany Bay, it's a single small craft moving at sublight speeds in normal space somewhere within 200 lightyears of Earth. It was incredibly long odds that Kirk found it in the first place - it beggars the imagination that it should happen
twice.
