I think it's just a well-executed marketing gimmick. Remember how much fuss people made of the previous week's episode featuring a naked Peter doing... strange things to a shaved-clean Brian? And coincidentally, how the Simpsons started making noises over their own character death (gone awry due to Marcia Wallace actually passing away the very week Four Regrettings and a Funeral was due to air)?

People are talking about it. By heck, people are even protesting over it, and that's just what FOX wants - free publicity. No doubt there'd be some contrived retcon button to bring Brian back - Family Guy runs on cartoon logic at the best of times (though, granted there have been some exceptions like that once-eternally pregnant character eventually having her child and the Clevelands moving away).

That and I seriously doubt a serious actor like Tony Sirico would permanently want to downgrade from HBO to FOX television to play a parody of himself full-time (William Shatner and Adam West exempted).

As Fnord excellently put it: "Wait for it."

I think Brian's death makes sense. A dog, at best, will live for 15 years. How long could they have kept him around?

Yes, I know this comes back to, "Why isn't Stewie a teenager by now?"

This is more of a "jump the shark" moment of that show by killing off one of the main characters in it.

He's coming back, and hopefully when he does Vinny will be a recurring character, like what South Park did to Kenny.

I like the new character more. Vinny is pretty funny. They'll probably bring Brian back, I thought I read somewhere that future episode synopsis mentioned Brian in them. New dog is booked for six more eps, also read. Could be hearsay, I dunno.

Even good things die out eventually.
Family Guy used to be good but I lost interest when stewie & brian got locked in the bank vault and brian had to "clean" stewies diaper.

I think it's better to retire something good early, like Calvin & Hobbs, than let it continue on and on into sad mediocrity, like the Simpsons.

I'm pretty sure I saw a quote from the creators saying future episodes will feature Brian. Like everyone else said, wait for it...

I knew it. It was a publicity stunt all along. I was right.

My concern about that was the repercussions for animated sitcoms as a whole.

They're going to bring him back through some sort of "deus ex machina", I just know it. And even if they don't, I've heard that Seth Macfarlane is sick of working on Family Guy.

I will honestly admit, for a while I kind of had this "holier than thou" stance on the show where I thought I was too sophisticated to enjoy it, after years of being a fan, but then after watching a bunch of episodes I had never seen before on my friend's American Netflix, I had rediscovered that its lame, sophomoric humor could in fact be quite entertaining. It's not the sort of show though where I can rewatch an old episode multiple times and discover new things about it to be entertained by, like the older seasons of The Simpsons.
