The diseases on House are what in Hollywood are referred to as a "McGuffin," they are a reasoning to advance the plot. This actually reminds me somewhat of Star Trek: The Next Generation which had the show begin in which some random unknown space something did something, and at the end they made up some fake nonsense to save the day. But it all didn't matter because it was *dramatic*.

Still, it can be fun to nitpick.

I love House, but I was a little irritated at the episodes (there were a few) in which a patient died (or was facing death) from using marijuana. Seriously.
The idea was that there was some kind of pesticide on it or something in the soil... clearly they wanted to try and demonize marijuana but couldn't think of any ways in which the plant itself could actually be harmful - cause it's not. Why address this and not other (harmful) substances? :?
And now that I think of it, House actually suggested smoking tobacco as a treatment for IBS. What's with that?? 'Pot kills, tobacco heals'?? huh? Clearly there are dark forces at work here...
But seriously, the show is definitely more about House and the social dynamics than the 'medicine'.

you're forgetting the episode where house walks in on wilson rolling pot for a patient who can't roll joints. house tries to steal one of the joints.

as far as tobacco and IBS...what episode was that in, again?

Okay, first of all. The diseases are actually fact based it's just that they are usually diseases/disorders that are RARE. I love the show but if you want to find a problem with it it is definitely the statistics of him being involved in so many rare diseases as well as the situations that go along with the disease. But smoking for IBS, I'm not sure if it was that it might of been IBD but maybe not. But while actively studying and collecting data on Crohn's disease and IBD, I did come across a study that showed that smoking did in fact improve the condition.

I must have missed that one. Haven't been seeing much of House since American Idiot took its place on Tuesdays. :(
I don't remember which episode it was - I googled it and, on the show, the prescription was for IBS. House prescribed 1 cigarette 2 times per day, which, supposedly, in real life, does help IBD.
I've been hearing recently of research involving the medicinal use of nicotine, and don't doubt that that it could be beneficial in some cases. Many extremely harmful substances can be beneficial in small doses.
Really, the tobacco wasn't the point, I just don't understand why they'd want to present pot in such a threatening way while pointing out the potential benefits of tobacco...

That's the one. I don't think he was an aspie though, he had some kind of childhood accident that left him with savant traits...

dave matthews wasn't playing an aspie...he was playing a full grown man who had brain damage that left him like a 3 year old mentally but also gave him an amazing gift of being able to play piano.

decent episode but not the best they've done.

I like the series, but I wish Fox would stop advertizing every other episode as a "This is one episode you MUST NOT MISS" event. In the last few months there have been a few episodes Fox hyped as The Most Important Episode Ever, and none of them were anything out of the ordinary.

(A great example is the episode in which the other doctors find out House has been going to Boston.)

I love house....it's predictable and full of it...but I can't stop watching it...Every episode follows the same pattern..it's hypnotic in a way...

That was Dave Mathews playing the savant?...(I don't recognise lots of famous people)

I tried watching the show once and I didn't like it. I admit the only reason I watched it was because of Hugh Laurie since I remember when he was in Black Adder III. All I can say is he hides his British accent very well.

Here's my problem with House-how unrealistic the way they practice medicine is. On the show these teams of doctors have hours and hours of time to mull over each patient, and even have staff meetings to discuss them. I wish real life was like that.

The only thing I didn't like about the Dave Matthews episode was that he didn't die. Since I have a deep and abiding hatred for that band I was really hoping House would fail this time.

Alas, House is a genius and managed to not only save his life but to make it better than it was before.
