Anyone a fan of the Star Wars prequels?
I think the prequels get a bad rap. Nothing can probably beat the epic Battle of Hoth from The Empire Strikes Back, but I mostly enjoyed the prequels, especially episode I and III.
IMO they made 3 major mistakes when making the prequels:
1. Casting Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker in Episode II and III
2. The addition of Jar Jar Binks as a character
3. Killing off Darth Maul too soon
Despite the hatred towards Jar Jar (From myself included), the casting decision of Anakin is likely the most detrimental to the franchise because he is the main character of the prequels. I found his Dark Side boasts in Revenge of the Sith to be exceptionally cringe-worthy.
That being said, there is (again, IMO) a lot more acting talent in the prequels than the original trilogy (I particularly liked Liam Neeson, Christopher Lee and the much greater role for Ian McDiarmid), the battle choreography is infinitely better, the special effects are better, the music is mostly better (the only exception being the legendary Luke v. Vader theme).
... and Samuel L. Jackson has a purple lightsaber. Your counter-arguments are invalid. ![]()
I didn't find the casting of Anakin to be a problem. A lot of the issue was the horribly done dialogue. Yes, Star Wars is supposed to have cheesy lines, but they really didn't do a good job with it in the prequels. I also felt one of the biggest issues was casting Natalie Portman as Amidala in part because she has all of the romantic talent of a brain dead chimp writhing on the ground. At least Christensen was able to pull off the creepy, stalkerish obsession of Anakin properly, but Portman only had real romantic chemistry in Black Swan and considering she was banging the dance choreographer we all know why.

The Romantic dialogue was bad, but it was all the more realistic for that, Anakin being a doofus teenager and all. Anakin was no genius (well, he was at engineering and piloting, but that's different), else his slide to the dark side, as it played out, would have been less believable. Writing Anakin's romantic banter with the nouse and maturity of Han and Leia's, wouldn't have worked for his character.
I think a lot of audience disappointment of the prequels comes from the fact that there's a general belief out there that George Lucas is an incompetent film maker, and this primes audiences to be cognitively lazy.

I agree with most of your points, but I disagree about Jar jar and Hayden. You should read the Darth Jar Jar post over at Reddit. It might change your opinion of the character. https://www.reddit.com/r/DarthJarJar/co ... egathread/
I think there's only one major flaw with the prequels, and that's not fully following through with Lucas's original intent for the Jar Jar Sith revelation. It's still incontrovertible, and incredibly obvious when you know to look for it, but it's kept in the background of the later 2 movies. He was supposed to be the main villain of the prequel trilogy.
In my humble opinion, i think the prequels get too much hate.I can see how average movie goers with just say "they sucked!" and leave it at that.
But for me I love Star Wars so much, that i can't hate the prequels. I love star wars as a saga.
One problem i notice with critics is they never seem to include the clone wars, despite the series being canon. The series helped fix alot of issiues the prequel trillogy had.
There is definitely a fair bit of band-wagoning going on. I remember when I first got into Star Wars as a teenager and started reading about it online and I was utterly shocked at how hated the prequels were, and at the time I had absolutely no idea why. It is just fashionable to hate on them, it's like how Star Trek fans try to pretend that the JJ Abrams reboots don't exist. I think the key problem in both of these cases is the tonal shift, the hated movies simply don't 'feel' the same as the classic ones.
I did try to watch the Clone Wars, I got through a season and a bit, but I just couldn’t get over the childish cartoony style, I had to minimise it every time someone walked past my room. I would have preferred it was done in a more traditional anime-like style.
I have noticed though that a lot of fans seem to have a new appreciation for the prequels lately, firstly because of the Darth JarJar theory, and secondly because TFA turned out to be a rehash of A New Hope.
I am convinced that prequel hate was the key reason why TFA turned out to be so unoriginal, they were desperate to convince fans that these new movies wouldn’t be like the prequels. For example, if they had gone into more detail about the political situation and what the Republic, Resistance and First Order actually are, of course the fans would hate that and would draw parallels to the Phantom Menace. In fact pretty much any criticism of TFA that I have come across can be easily explained by the simple fact that if they had done it any differently, the fans would have hated it.

And you know what's the worst part about TFA? the fact that, while the original trilogy fans enjoy TFA because 'nostalgia', we prequel fans are left to the dust, completely ignored and forgotten. Am I the only one that went on like "Where's Coruscant? Where's Naboo? Where's every planet that I know and love?!" as I watched the movie? Even the OT planets were completely gone, instead replaced by these phony planets that just serve as an excuse to make the movie seem "new". Overall Star Wars: the Force Awakens is just a pure fanservice movie for the whiny and ignorant original trilogy fans, not the Star Wars fanbase in general. Which is kind of ironic since a lot of the young people right now (myself included) grew up with the Star Wars prequels, and now the newer Star Wars movies
are going to appeal to an audience that grew up with the franchise since 1977. They age is about, oh I don't know, 30 to 70 years old!?
To be very honest, I don't hate TFA. At least it made sure it avoided the majority of the prequel's mistakes. Despite this I feel like J. J. Abrams and his crew could've at least taken a few of the good things from the prequels (The cool lightsaber fights, the imaginative use of CGI, the colorful variety of planets and alien races, ect.) and just sprikle them in TFA in subtle and unnoticeable ways.
But NOPE! We prequel fans are now under the cruel dictatorship of the
the original trilogy nerds. What a shame.

I hear that alot from people how just got into TCW.I try to warn people that the first season is pretty childish, but it does get better. In fact once you get to the 2nd half of season 3.And especially season 5 you'll forget about the childish stuff from season 1 completely. There are quite a few dark episodes from this point on.The ones involving Darth Maul usually have that.
And about the animation, honestly it has improved as the seasons went on.
Didn't sway me an inch
RLM endorsed Abrams for a SW gig, years ago. Given the popularity of their channel, it might have helped inform Disney's decision.

To be fair there's still at least 2 more movies to come. I see TFA as Abrams sort of "testing the waters" to see what people will like by playing it safe. Who knows? maybe he'll learn?
Like i said: i judge Star Wars as a whole.Just my opinion.
In the meantime there's always Rebels

Do you think I could get away with simply skipping to that point (or perhaps cherry-pick the more notable early episodes), or do I need to tough it out and struggle through the first 2 seasons?
Regarding TFA, I wouldn't say it is simply pure fanservice for the OT fans, because from what I have seen, it (or its hype at least) has done a great job of attracting new fans. I have come across multiple people who have been drawn into the franchise as a direct result of TFA and its hype. From this perspective, the way in which TFA is essentially a summary of the OT is quite helpful, because new fans can then watch the OT and the characters, settings, props, ships, etc. are already familiar to them, so there are things for them to latch onto.

I'd be lying if I said TFA wasn't a pure fanservice flick for people disappointed by the prequel trilogy. But again, I don't get why people take Star Wars so seriously. TFA was a fun popcorn flick, a little bit mindless, but still entertaining. Plus, I really think Kylo Ren is a cool villain, even though he's a cliche tortured young man like Anakin was in RotS... though I'll admit that such angsty, over the top characters are a guilty pleasure of mine.
It's hard for me to talk at length about it without really spoiling too much though. I know there are still people out there who want to see it, but can't afford a ticket, and don't want to resort to piracy. That's understandable; as I've only seen a crappy cam-rip, I'm hoping I still have a chance to catch it in a theater myself, but chances aren't that great since it premiered almost a month ago. I dunno, do theaters still do cheaper off-hours showings for movies that have been out for a while? I at least want to actually show my support for the people who made it rather than being a mere freeloader like I usually am with these things.
Actualy, yes you could. But you would need some sort of episode guide.Which i'll be happy to provide my own recomendations for those interested.
Stay tuned!
