Making a two-hour movie of Dune is like making a two-hour movie of Game of Thrones (Paul Atreides in the first book and Jon Snow are very similar). George Lucas ripped of many things when he made Star Wars, though. What makes Star Wars good isn't it's originality (it's far from original in any way), but that it takes what worked well in Dune, Flash Gordon and several western movies and combines it. A fun fact is that Paul Atreides' concubine dies when giving birth to twins, so the plagiarism goes a little deeper than simply following a formula, though...

The David Lynch movie has nice sets, and for it's day it also had nice special effects. The script is a mess, and the acting is horrible, though. The games do the books more justice.
