1) its NOT "about" autism. Never was.
2)Its not really "about" science either.
3)Its about four socially awkard geeky dudes who happened to be scientists. Brilliant, but lacking social smarts. With Sheldon Leonard being the uber geek of the bunch. More brainy, and yet dumber, then the rest. One of the girls (Amy Fowler) is also a Brainiac-but-geek.

Indeed Sheldon is sort of a cartoon version of an aspie (though that wasn't the intent of the show creators). Not exactly accurate, but precisely because he is so exaggerated and over the top in his social ineptitude you can point to him and say "that's what aspergers looks like".
