I have seen parts of the program when my brother watches it. Very little though. I didn't know it was about autism. I assumed it was a commedy based on science.

I didn't like it. Sheldon Cooper was way too much explicit in being autistic.

Even I, as an asperger, ever behave like this.

I thought that the character Raj had to be and autie/aspie myself with his selective mutism

1) its NOT "about" autism. Never was.

2)Its not really "about" science either.

3)Its about four socially awkard geeky dudes who happened to be scientists. Brilliant, but lacking social smarts. With Sheldon Leonard being the uber geek of the bunch. More brainy, and yet dumber, then the rest. One of the girls (Amy Fowler) is also a Brainiac-but-geek.

4) However during the almost decade the show ran it became associated with aspergers in the minds of viewers, because the main characters, especially Sheldon, exhibit aspergers/autistic type traits.

Indeed Sheldon is sort of a cartoon version of an aspie (though that wasn't the intent of the show creators). Not exactly accurate, but precisely because he is so exaggerated and over the top in his social ineptitude you can point to him and say "that's what aspergers looks like".

IMHO, the show really started to go downhill after season 4
