Neon Genesis Evangelion
Back in my anime club in college, we all agreed that it was likely the greatest anime of all time (even if there were some we enjoyed more), but ironically, almost everyone hated Shinji. I can't think of many other shows where the main character is so disliked, but not an anti-hero.
I bought all of the real-model figures of the Evas made in the late 90's when they were imported to the states around 2000. These were way better than the slightly larger figures made later on, becuse they were articulated enough, but could just stand up and look inert, as they were most of the time on the show. Those larger ones were always locked into some unflattering action pose, and while they had more accessories, this included 2-5 extra sets of hands that you'd be likely to lose.
A friend pointed out the similarity between Shinji's dad and Dr. Venture on The Venture Brothers. Not just that glasses and beard-sans-moustache, but his almost non-existant relationship with his sons, whose mom is also out of the picture.

Sorry, double submission. I also have the first DVD box set they released, not the platinum, but I've NEVER watched it because I've just seen other people's copies so many times.
I also bought all the Evangelion Kubrick toys, which were cool because they had cute little playsets and a lot of characters and angels didn't get toys in any other scale. Haven't bought the Eva Stikfas though.
Since Sachiel is the only larger scale angel they made into a toy, it's hard to come up with suitable opponents for them from my collection. Beanie Cthulu is a good match, as is Trypticon, the Decepticon city/dinosaur. The only other Transformer I usually pit them against is Break from Beast Wars Neo, who transforms into a penguin. I like to think that if the series had gone on, Pen Pen might have turned out to secretly be an Angel, and Break is the perfect stand-in.

speaking of Evangelion and unflattering poses, i can never find any decent figures of the human characters...its always cosplay this or bikini special edition that. so i ended up making my own models of them..looking melancholy..like they did most of the time in the series. tis good being an artist...
LOL! About a year ago, an issue of toyfare had a blurb about the latest eva toys, which consisted of some pvc ministatues of Rei and Asuka in various lingire, underneath which they commented, "Say, does anyone remember when this anime used to have giant robots in it?"
At the time of those "sprawling" figures I mentioned, they actually did do a good 6-7 inch figure of Rei suited up. It wasn't very poseable, but it had enough interchangable limbs that you could have her natural, or all bandaged up with the eyepatch. I got the lavender-haired version because I missed the original release of the blue-haired one. She came with a lot of accessories that she couldn't interact with, most notably the only Lance of Longinus in the line. In most of the other Eva lines, it naturally comes packaged with the blue version of Eva 00.
They may have also done Asuka and Shinji, but I can't remember.
Say, are the figures you made just statues you sculpted, or do you customise some sort of base figures?

unfortunatly anime products can be hard to come by here in aus.
though i couple o' years back i bought this garage kit of Rei and Asuka wearing re-designed plug suits to look like swimsuits..it was made by this up and coming artist and i did a little research and found out this kit is pretty popular and saw some pics of people cosplaying as the figures!!
that figure you describe sounds pretty cool...the coolest evangelion stuff i have would have to be plushies of both Rei and Eva unit 00
