Academy Award nominations
i was baffled when zodiac wasnt nominated for anything, it had really great visual effects. you may be thinking "what visual effects were in zodiac?" and thats what good visual effects are, invisible, they should just look like live action photography. there was a ton of visual effects work in that film, you couldnt film a period piece in the san francisco bay area today without it.
too bad there will be blood didnt qualify for best original score, even though it wasnt entirely originally composed for the film, its still one of the most beautiful soundtracks in modern cinema.
Best picture is a toss up for me between no country for old men and there will be blood, i loved both. though i have not seen atonement yet.
Best actor should go to daniel day lewis, the performance was genius.
Best supporting actor should go to Javier bardem, for one of the greatest villans in film, anton chigurh
i loved no country for old men, but PT Andersonshould get best direction, he really deserves it for TWBB
Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published should go to No Country for old Men but if TWBB wins it, i wouldnt mind.
Cinematography - There Will Be Blood
Best Achievement in Editing - again a toss up between There Will Be Blood and No Country for old Men
Best Achievement in Sound - Bourne Ultimatum, that movie's tension relied on a great script, but more so on its intense and well orchestrated visuals, sound and score.
predictions: there will be blood will win less than it deserves, no country should do well, i would be surprised if either of them sweeps the Oscars this year. the academy voters do love films like atonement and Michael Clayton much more than the former two especially more than TWBB. films that deal with darker issues and human depravity often do poorly at the oscars. yes, the awards are really not a definitive view on what's best every year, but they certainly are a big deal to the film industry.
the academy awards are full of s**t. here's all you have to do to get nominated.
BEST PICTURE
- make sure your film is three hours long (at least)
- make it about either WW2 or Africa
- it had to make no money and nobody came to see it
BEST ACTOR
- three words: gay, ret*d, or dying (Tom Hanks has done all three)
BEST ACTRESS
- either you have to be too young to appreciate it (Anna Paquin at 12) or so old they give it to you on your death bed (Jessica Tandy at 80)
BEST DIRECTOR
- losers: Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Fredrico Fellini, Robert Altman
- winners: Kevin Costner (nuff said)
also look up the list of classic films that lost best picture. it's staggering.
