Last night we watched:

Encanto [2021]
>=>"Magical House. Magical Family."

We agree it is a very good movie. We disagreed about the music, however. She thought it was wonderful; I thought the music sounded too much like a big performance to go with the movie—the music was good but I think it was just too BIG for what I saw on the screen (which was also very good).

But the movie is good and we recommend it.

Murder My Sweet (1944)

This is the seventh (or is it the eighth?) item I've watched from my 'Film Noir' box set, and they sure ain't getting any better. Predictably hailed by many critics as a masterpiece of the genre (even the masterpiece), but I just found it overwhelmingly complicated and confusing, especially in the last fifteen or twenty minutes. The usual mix of wisecracking dialogue, femmes fatales, and Americans indulging in their favourite pastime in these sorts of films, ie shooting each other. Welcome to Yawn City.

Farewell, My Lovely, Raymond Chandler was the author of the book. Chandler's influence is still here today in American detective novels. I'm a fan, I'm also a fan of the old westerns. I will say it's an American thing. Elmore Leonard is another great story teller.

^ I found Double Indemnity (1944) from my Film Noir box set to be very enjoyable, and Out Of The Past (1947) to be very watchable, but the other half dozen or so I have struggled with. American Film Noir is definitely not my thing, in all likelihood!

Not a great connoisseur of 1940s films in general. One I have always liked though is Dead Of Night (1945), a British 'portmanteau' quasi-horror film.

Wow, Dead of Night has influenced a lot of the 60's Twilight Zone. I'll have to look for it.

Double Indemnity is Chandler and Billy Wilder working the screenplay and Wilder directing.

Casablanca is my favorite 40's movie.
