I enjoyed it. I don't know anything about basketball or Nike beyond a pair of trainers I own, and it managed to hold my attention and make me invested in the story. There's tonnes of 80s music if you like that. It's interesting seeing the construction of an American icon, even if it did feel a bit like a hymn to capitalism at times lol. Viola Davis is always good at portraying matriarchal power. I went to see it with my dad, he loved it because he loves uplifting stories, and my mum's going to see it next week so I will probably go with her.

Is it any good, I've had it downloaded for a while now but haven't watched it.

It was a bit frustrating in the storytelling but not nearly as bad as I thought it would be considering it got critically panned. It involves a lot of 'sit here and I'll tell you a story', and while there are some really sumptuous visuals to accompany each tale, it still felt like quite a clunky way of getting the expository stuff out there. Show, don't tell, and all that. The colours were lovely, I'd watch it again, but it felt like it was missing some soul. Protagonist is definitely autistic though so the clunkiness kind of makes sense, as she's telling the story.

Based upon a novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, set on a fictionalized version of Mars known as Barsoom. The lead character is a Virginia soldier who is a veteran of the American Civil war who is transported to Mars...where the weaker gravity effectively gives him incredible strength and jumping ability compared to the natives of Mars.

Even though the movie does not feel like a huge blockbuster when I watch it, it is very well made and a very excellent movie.

This movie is good RECOMMENDED good

It's now considered a cult classic not only because of what it's based from,
but also how poor Disney did in marketing this film.

Cheers for the review, I'll give it a go.

Creature (1998)

A made for TV movie which at over two-and-a-half hours is way too long. It's a sort of cross between 'Alien' and 'Jaws' set in the Caribbean, the monster being part shark and part human. It's not anywhere near unwatchable, but I found it hard to take seriously at times: the male lead (a character called 'Chase' played by one Craig T Nelson) was a dead ringer for Scouse scallywag Jimmy Corkhill from the UK soap opera 'Brookside', and his 15 year old son looked about 23. Chase's ex-wife is played by Kim 'Sex And The City' Cattrall.

Enemy.

A college professor becomes obsessed with an actor who is his exact double in this surreal horror film. The movie has an ever present sense of dread, as these two men try to understand the "why," but can find none, and then switch places, only to find that the women in one another's lives can't be fooled. Highly recommended.

I sincerely liked it before it gained a cult following.

I agree. However, I thought if John Carter (the character) had had more swagger (e.g., James Bond) it would've tipped the movie up to clear greatness. I think I've heard, though, that Taylor Kitsch was ill during much of the filming and that could've made "swagger" more difficult. But it is still a very, very good movie...and beautiful visually.

Last night I watched:

Idaho Transfer [1973]
<=>"The future is a great place to visit....."

The plot summary in Wikipedia describes the movie pretty well.

I'll note that the acting is so-so and most of the characters are sort of hippieish.

The story focuses on some of the characters in the setting of time travel to a time after civilization has been wiped out, but not on time travel or on what happened to civilization. And not much happens with the characters.

The movie was directed by Peter Fonda. Some might assert this movie hints at why he directed so few movies.

On the bright side, the movie is filmed and set in some rather rough, remote locations in Idaho so the time travelers have to wear heavy boots and bulky trousers when they are in the future. However, the time transfer device has trouble transferring metal so the boots and trousers must be removed when being transferred to the future or back from it. And quite a few of the characters are played by attractive young ladies.

Vacation (2015)

Game Night (2018)

After discovering Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was co-written and co-directed by John Frances Daley, I thought I would check out these two films that were also co-written and co-directed by him.

Vacation is a sequel to National Lampoon's Vacation. Ed Helms plays the role of Rusty, grown up and with a family, his wife, played by Christina Applegate, and two sons. I had one problem, and it isn't the movies fault. I generally do not do well with humiliation humor, something Ed Helms specializes in. I just find it painful instead of funny. Again, that's not the movie's fault. I know there are people that find it funny. There are plenty of other moments that are very funny. Basically everyone is funny, and Ed is funny one out of three or four times. It is not a family film, unless all the members of the family are adults and don't mind some the adult humor. I found the open and end credits creative and funny. As I am the only adult in the house, the adult humor was not a problem. Like the original movie, Rusty is trying to take his family to Walley World.

Game Night was very funny. Jason Bateman (Max) and Rachel McAdams (Annie) play a husband and wife who love playing games with their friends. Every week they have game night. They are very good at playing games. Then Max's older brother Brooks, played by Kyle Chandler visits, providing Max with anxiety, because Brooks is better at everything. The basic story is Brooks has his own game night, and his game is a kidnapping mystery. Then he is kidnapped, and it isn't part of the game. No one else realizes that it's not part of Brooks game and set out solve the mystery. It's quite funny, full of twists and surprises.

I watched them on DVDs from Netflix.

Call Girl Of Cthulhu.

Horror/comedy, in which a starving artist falls in love with a prostitute, only to discover she's been destined to give birth to Cthulhu's child in order to bring about the end of mankind. Lots of Lovecraftian references. Special effect look cheap, but still a fun cinematic romp.

It wasn't as good as the first 3. I thought people were exaggerating, but it really just goes into "torture porn" territory and the traps are like, unnecessarily f****d up for no particular reason. At least in Saw 3 it was more f****d up as a plot point about one of the characters making the traps. I wouldn't say it's super bad, and it kept my attention, but it's not a great movie and is just more disgusting than thrilling to watch.
