What's your verdict?

I prefer Ridley Scott's original with Rutger Hauer from 1982....but...they both effect me emotionally

I agree. Hauer as Roy Batty is right up there with Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader as one of my favorite sympathetic villains.

Spiders (2000)

From my 'Creature Features' Hollywood compilation dvd. Better than the two 'Octopus' movies on this disc, but still pretty naff, and only really capable of being enjoyed at some level if you lower your expectations to almost zero. A lethal spider, created as an experiment on the space shuttle, comes back to earth and wreaks havoc in a secret military base in the USA, until it's confronted by a slightly whacky journalist played by Lana Parrilla.....

Banshee Chapter.

Imagine, if you will, if H.P. Lovecraft and Hunter S. Thomas could've collaborated together on a movie script. Well, this would possibly be it.
A journalist searches for a friend who had disappeared while taking a CIA synthesized drug used in the MKULTRA project, for a documentary he was making. She discovers a strange, underground world of a short wave numbers station, used by intelligence agencies and criminals, and the cryptic source of the drug, calling itself, Friends in Colorado. This all leads her to a famed writer and drug enthusiast, who makes her believe she has taken the drug with him and his chemist/female companion, when something horrific comes for them in the night. Journalist and author desperately hunt for the drug's origin, as they realize the drug turns the human brain into a receiver from... somewhere else, when they find the deserted CIA base where horrific experiments were conducted, exposing human beings to hostile beings with some unknown agenda.
First rate horror movie. Highly recommended.

I saw that movie in its theatrical release, back when I was a kid. That was a big deal for me back then , as I've been a life long Lovecraft fan.
What's you're verdict?

Last night we watched:

The Creator [2023]
<=>"Humanity evolves."

<=+=\o/=+=>\o/R E C O M M E N D E D\o/

Exellent. Not great, but almost. Definitely excellent.

Directed and co-written by Gareth Edwards. Given his work-history I guess I shouldn't be surprised that the movie is visually beautiful, uses special effects incredibly well (winning multiple awards for that), and has a good story that doesn't focus too deeply on the characters and their motivations and emotions.

Watching it I correctly caught influences of Blade Runner and the Star Wars universe. Apparently Baraka was also an influence. Were I going to recommend adjustment to the movie it would be to be make it darker, better reflecting the Blade Runner influence more.

A very significant robot was played by Gemma Chan who also played a very significant robot in HUMANS [2015–2018]. While it was probably not intended for this reason, her roles in HUMANS and The Creator are conceptually very compatible so this movie might be seen as an inadvertent sequel to that TV series.

I love it. I'm watching Bride of Re-Animator now.

Anamorph.

A New York police detective, haunted by the suspicion that the wrong suspect had been killed in a spree of serial murders years before, finds the killer, or a copy cat, is picking up where the murders ended. The killer incorporates artistic imagery and perspective into his murders, making this a gruesome horror film.
Pretty decent film. Probably somewhat inspired by Seven in it's dark, creepy look, and in the killer's esoteric motivation.

I've seen this movie a few times in the past.

It's an excellent psychological horror film with brilliant performances
by Wilem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson. The B&W cinematography was also terrific.

Wishmaster.

An evil Djinn emerges into 20th century America, trying to get humans to ask for three wishes, all of which turn horribly wrong.
Not great, but fun horror movie.

The 1996 BBC mini-series of The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (Anne Brontë)
It was exceptional - the best literary adaptation I've ever seen.

I watched it on Anne's 204th birthday.
RIP to the first English feminist novelist.

I must admit I think of Twilight as Helen, in the way that I'm like Isabella from WH.
The story is such a parallel to her life.

:(

I love a good literary adaptation, and you are right! TTOWH is certainly an awesome one.

Have to say though, in spite of my literary undergrad, I regret the rule of ending quickly when all the conflict is resolved. I always want more of the happily-ever-after. :lol:

There's enough conflict in life, and never enough love.

:D :D :heart:
