The Babadook.

First rate Australian horror movie about a widowed mother who feels resentment for her child, born the day her husband had been killed in a car accident, and who is constantly in trouble in school. Is it the negativity in her life that brings the bogeyman character, the Babadook, from a children's book, into her home?

Blue Velvet.

We were in a David Lynch mood, so we watched what very well be his greatest work.

I watched the new Nosferatu. I didn't much care for it. It was a bit too silly to be at all scary.

Last night we watched:

A Clockwork Orange [1971]
<=>"Being the adventures of a young man ...
<=>"/!\who couldn't resist pretty girls ...
<=>"/!\/!\or a bit of the old ultra-violence ...
<=>"/!\/!\/!\went to jail, was re-conditioned ...
<=>"/!\/!\/!\/!\and came out a different young man ...
<=>"/!\/!\/!\/!\/!\or was he ?"

Alex was a very bad person. He didn't work, he took from other people. He didn't have a social life, he violently sexually attacked those he fancied. He didn't work with other people, he bullied them, violently. He didn't value his followers, they were a means to an end and he bullied them, violently, and expected them to glorify him.

We get to see what a horrible person he was and we see him tumble from control.

And then he comes back.

Night of the Demons (1988)
This is a film targeting 1988 older kids, 18 to early 20s, or 14 to 17 if they s teens to twenty year olds. The characters are stereotypes, but they are consistently stereotypical 1980s obnoxious older kids. Cartoonish. Like character types based on characters from other films based on other films... not on real life. I think that may be true of many films, but it is over the top and it's what stood out to me. I cannot say it a BAD though, because as said, it was consistent. It had a Nightmare on Elm Street vibe to the world it created, as a group of older kids (mostly obnoxious) gather at a run down abandoned house/mortuary for a Halloween party.

To save time, this is the plot outlined on Wikipedia: Night of the Demons (plot)

One thing the plot on Wikipedia does not mention is the good girl Judy has a costume, which at first I thought
was Dorothy Gayle (Wizard of Oz), but at the end I recognized as possibly Alice of Alice in Wonderland. I'm not sure there is much difference between the two, visually or symbolically. I am 100% certain I am not the first person to realize Dorothy Gayle is the cousin of Alice. There have probably been many a thesis written on the topic. Alice and Dorothy.

So those are the two things I came away with from this film, obnoxious stereo type characters, and Judy's costume.

I watched it yesterday morning on Comet TV.

Also, don't confuse this with Night of the Demon, aka Curse of the Demon, a 1957 directed by Jacques Tourneur.

After a very quick look up, I found LOTS of comparisons and pictures combining the two.

HUMOR

I'm not sure what to say regarding this film. It seemed slow.

Later I watched some of the extras on the DVD and saw things I don't recall seeing while watching the film.

Was the whole movie slow or did I fall asleep before the pace picked up? I'll have to rewatch it to find out.
I might've fallen asleep. I watched this movie again yesterday and it turns out it is the kind of movie that might put me to sleep.

I'm not saying it is a bad movie. It's just that I prefer my horror to come with comedy, not slow, anticipatory drama.

How the sports department for the American Broadcasting Company(ABC) ended up broadcasting the first live coverage of a terrorist attack.

Gripping thriller even though I know how it ended.

I watched Mutiny On The Bounty (1962 version) free on YouTube.. a younger fit slimline Marlon Brando then, whose portrayal of Fletcher Christian was reasonably compelling and a great cast. I love history generally and the story of the Bounty intrigued me years ago when I met a descendant of Fletcher Christian. (There are many people in the South Pacific who are descended from the Bounty mutineers). Interesting piece of history, and the film does portray what happened accurately..

Netflix movie Loup-Garous (werewolves)
it was fun, cool idea to make a Jumanji like movie about the Werewolves game.

Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror (2023)
streamed on Tubi TV

An interesting idea for a film. It sounds like it was intended to be a shot for shot remake of the 1922 film. From what I've read in exactly two spots, the backgrounds were to be pulled/recreated from the original film, and the actors green screened in. Doug Jones plays Count Orlok.
I recommend the short entry on Wikipedia for background information.

Wikipedia says the intent was the backgrounds were to be colorized, but the film is for the most part black and white. I think the backgrounds are CGI.

Over all, it was okay. It was a little weird, because in the end, it is a copy and it was difficult to see it as anything else. Also, the original was so visual, being a film without sound. Still, there were some additions in the film that were nice. Doug Jones was very good. The music was good. The makeup was good. The backgrounds were good, full of atmosphere and texture.

Directed by David Lee Fisher
Writing credit to Bram Stoker, Henrik Galeen, and F.W. Murnau.

Link to the movie on Tubi TV.
I don't know if it is accessible everywhere. International licensing and all that.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (2005)
streamed on Tubi TV

Another film from David Lee Fisher. Same principal as Nosferatu. He used computer generated backgrounds from the 1920 film and green screened the actors into the film.
Doug Jones plays Cesare. I'm not sure anyone could surpass Conrad Veidt's performance, but Doug Jones does an admirable job. I enjoyed this film. The makeup has a silent movie feel to it, emphasizing the eyes, and I thought it held together pretty well with the abstract backgrounds.
I enjoyed this.

Late Night With The Devil.

Found footage horror film, in which a Johnny Carson rival, attempting to achieve TV ratings, has a girl abused by a Satanic cult channels a demonic presence. It explains why Carson remained king of late night.
Very enjoyable horror film.

Stop Motion.

A stop motion movie artist, in the shadow of her dying, overbearing mother (a legendary movie maker), is inspired by a neighborhood girl (or is she?) to make her own movie. Soon, the movie which is disturbing to say the least (with puppets made of spoiled meat and a dead fox), begins to overtake her everyday life as she reaches the end of her sanity.
Very first rate horror flick!

Ten Little Indians (1989)
streamed on Tubi TV

I've read the book, And Then There Were None, by Agatha Christie, and I sure they will change the film around to appeal to the broad public.

Of course they change the ending to appeal to a broader audience.
According to the Trivia on IMDB
IMDB:Trivia wrote:
The original script was much more faithful to the original Agatha Christie novel with the setting on an island and the original grim conclusion of the book. However, producer Harry Alan Towers changed it at the last second when he realized that it would be cheaper to shoot in the African outback and that the novel's ending is less marketable than Christie's happier resolution from the play version of the story.
