Mara Maru (1952)

An adventure film starring Errol Flynn, Ruth Roman and Raymond Burr, set in the Philippines a few years after World War 2. Has many of the attributes (if that's the right word) of a 'Film Noir' in its first half, with mysterious murders, double crossings and potential red herrings, but things become a lot clearer as it morphs into a more straightforward action film. Not bad, but not great either. 6.5 out of 10.

'Mara Maru' is the name of the ship that Flynn captains in the hunt for a suitcase full of diamonds lying in a sunken wreck on the seabed, while Burr's character tries to thwart him at every turn.

Last night we watched:

The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie [2024]
<=>"About to blow up around the world."

"First fully animated Looney Tunes feature-length film to be released theatrically.
<=>All prior films were either compilations of shorts or partly live-action."

...at the beginning of the movie baby Daffy Duck and baby Porky Pig live together in the home of the human man that is their foster father.

The movie is a pretty good cartoon. I bought it with the expectation that my bride would enjoy it...
she did...now I'm going to have to buy any comparable Looney Tunes films that I can find.

Marked Woman (1937)

Bette Davis plays a nightclub 'hostess' (wink, wink) who falls foul of the gangster who has bought the club. The latter murders Bette's younger sister, and the rest of the movie revolves around his trial. Will Bette testify against him? Will he get off?

Not bad (it is a Bette Davis film after all) but its structure is lacking somewhat. Davis's character actually testifies in two different (yet similar) trials here, and it all seems rather repetitive and unimaginative. I also often get the feeling when watching some American films that they put the legal profession on a bit of a pedestal (crusading DAs, hotshot lawyers, etc). In the UK we tend to be more cynical about these matters, and you'll frequently hear people referring to 'bent lawyers' and 'incompetent solicitors', never mind the rapacious fees these people charge.

Humphrey Bogart is in this as well. He plays the up-and-coming crusading hotshot Deputy DA, LOL.

I saw it too. I really enjoyed it. I loved the camera work in it.

Last night, after watching "John's Chase Log" (short), we watched:

Pitch Black [2000]
<=>"Don't be afraid of the dark. Be afraid of what's in the dark."

Good Science Fiction horror/thriller and the opening film in the The Chronicles of Riddick franchise.

Last night we watched:

The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury [2004]

It's 35-minutes long and animated...and fits well into the sequence of Riddick movies.

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale (2025)

Watched it at the 5:00 show, Thursday, September 11, at the theater. It takes place in 1930.

I enjoyed it.

The Djinn.

A mute boy, whose mother had committed suicide, starts a new life with his father in a new house, when he discovers a forbidden book hidden away, which promises the granting of wishes... but for a terrible price. He wishes for his voice... but has to contend with the malevolent being that comes to grant it.
Decent low budget horror flick.

Last night, after watching "Toomb's Chase Log" (short), we watched:

The Chronicles of Riddick [2004]
<=>"All the power in the universe can't change destiny"

Another good Science Fiction thriller in the The Chronicles of Riddick franchise.
