Universal's Wolfman movie ripped off Twilight: New Moon!
Remember, it is often empty vessels that make the most noise. That being said, I still can't help but shake the feeling that the letter may have been satirical.
It's pretty risky satire. If it is indeed satirical, well, Andy Kaufman's spirit lives on. But I can fully accept the ardent idiot theory. There's loads of steam behind that engine... The passionate young, the "but-daddy-I-love-him" stage of human development. Having been near that country in my travels through life, I can tell you it's enough for you to do some very embarrassing things.

You're forgetting the fact that Twilight is a very very stupid story. The only way for a moderately intelligent person to enjoy Twilight is by mocking it.
Edward is an a**hole. Bella is an idiot. Perfect couple? Uh, I guess.
The only value Twilight has is as unintentional comedy. Actually, with Rifftrax (commentary by Mike Nelson, Bill Corbett and Kevin Murphy from Mystery Science Theater 3000) it's one of the funniest movies to come out recently. I hope they do a Rifftrax of New Moon too.

Heh. Jerk-asses tend to have airhead groupies gravitating towards them on a regular basis, or so I've noticed.
So it's a bit of a vampire-themed Plan 9 From Outer Space, then?
I think I'm better off sticking with True Blood for my regular vampire-fix...

I've heard more guys complain that girls don't like nice guys. Twilight feeds off of that more than anything. For what it's worth, if I ever finish writing a novel, I intend that to be one thing I include... a nice guy getting the girl. Mind you, I have no illusions of ever receiving critical acclaim. It's hard to write anything fresh and I doubt I'm willing to do what it takes to freshen an old plot (that's really all there are) enough to impress the modern world. I've just decided to write what amuses me and I am immensely pleased by the idea of a nice guy getting the girl... after going through Hell first, because otherwise it would be a very dull book.
I don't expect I'll ever write a book that shocks anyone. But hopefully I can write one that will be picked up and read by a girl who might otherwise be reading a book that sets her romantic imaginings up for things that never turn out pretty in real life. There may not be vampires to date, but there are plenty of jerks. In any case, at least I know the wolfman wasn't invented for New Moon. Lon Chaney Jr played him ever so long ago (so long that he actually looked pretty suave in his street clothes... that didn't last). Who knows how many have played him since?
Thinking about that, I can see why the satire theory is so attractive. It is hard to believe that anyone might not have heard of even one wolf movie or werewolf (THERE wolf) legend ever before the Twilight sequel.
By the way, I don't know if you've seen these:

But there is one for Twilight, and New Moon is on their up and coming list. One of our favorites around here is Jaws... you can click on the floating bun at the end and he sings the Jaws theme. Also good, March of the Penguins. But they're all quite funny.
But anything's possible.

I think somebody once said that there are really only seven stories. It's how they're told that matters. If a story is well-told - or pretty and whiz-bang-ish enough - then it can be most hokey piece of fiction ever, and people will love it (as has happened with Avatar along with Twilight & New Moon).
Michael J. Fox in Teen Wolf is probably one of my favourites

I hadn't seen those before, but they're pretty funny. Rabbits can clearly make anything hilarious - have you seen those Bunny Suicide picture books, where rabbits try killing themselves in various crazy ways (for example: one rabbit observes that a magnet shop is opening up opposite a kitchen-knives store. When it opens, he simply stands in the street between them and gets shredded by all the knives flying out of the window
