Would you trust Oprah to do a show on Asperger's?

Yes, I would trust her to do a show on Asperger's; I like Dr. Phil so much that I watch it almost every day; I would trust both of them to do a show completely about Asperger's.

Hell no. not in a million years no. oprah=bad medicine.

I see a lot of potential problems if this was done, simply because I consider trying to express the issue of Autism Spectrum Disorders is rather a difficult subject due to it's diversity. If she presents a very successful Asperger person, then the expectations of parents with low functioning Autistics will be risen and therefore more extreme sociological measures will be used to force them to behave to 'Oprah's norm', and demand success from them. If she presents a low functioning Autistic, then the expectations of Asperger people will be lowered to a point of beyond current patronizing proportions and treat all of us like morons and our creditability and potential to obtained decent jobs will likely be damaged. You know how most people are, 'they can only see black and white but not in a spectrum'.

I might be too critical but I've had enough experience to know that advocacy represented by someone who doesn't have the state of mind of someone in the Autism Spectrum Disorder, doesn't work. I prefer the approach, "We speak for ourselves" because it's the best way awareness can be represented, considering we have the state of mind.

But... If there was a Oprah show nonetheless, it'll have to have multiple guest of different parts of the spectrum otherwise the social impact would cause more problems than it solves.

I don't care if she does a show on it or not. I might watch it if she did though. Especially if she had someone like... Dan Aykroyd on. Hah. O_O

If she doesn't do anything that would result in us being hated more i'm fine with it.

I wish someone would do a show about adult Aspies with examples, and not only the most "extreme" ones. And include some AS women, who may even present as normal sometimes, but nevertheless have HUGE problems with anything remotely social-related, including on the job, and how even if someone is quite intelligent, if they don't immediately perceive the correct way to act in a situation on the job, they may not just be doing it to be annoying, maybe they really **don't** know what to do in that situation.

As for the question, I would trust her more than Dr. Phil, but that's not saying much. If she is to do a show on AS, then she would need to get different people from different "functioning abilities" along the spectrum to give an accurate representation.

morningdove- doesn't SAD stand for "seasonal affective disorder" or something like that? It's a form of depression that people suffer from during the winter mostly.

It probably stands for heaps of things. They usually have lists of identical acronyms on Wikipedia.

For instance, in New Zealand the AA does car insurance. But it stands for "Automobile Association", rather than that other thing.

No way, I wouldn't trust Oprah with an Aspie show. Ever since she started supporting Dr. Phil through thick and thin I've realized, despite that as a personality she's pretty kewel (and rich), she doesn't know much about the real world of psychology. She focuses on sob stories. I have little doubt she'd take a curbie perspective. It's always the "motherly" population that's her biggest fanbase and that's who she'd play to.

Ive seen "SAD" used for both disorders...yeah it can be confusing sometimes....I dont have the seasonal defective one, Im from Miami, I love winter here!
