This may not be all but it's some off the top of my head, and favourites shared with others on here:

Avatar
District 9
Star Wars (any of them)
I, Robot
Iron Man
Transformers (2007)
Watchmen (that's got to count, no?)
The Fifth Element
Back to the Future (all of them)
Total Recall
Inception (though it did nearly cause my brain to explode)

Ahh, problems must be rectified. You must see the essentials of the genre. 2001, Blade Runner, Solaris, Metropolis. Maybe even Planet of The Apes, Close Encounters, Terminator, and Alien/s.

I don't particularly like all of those movies as much as others(particularly Alien/s, Terminator, and Close Encounters), but they are major works in the genre. I wasn't going to give the movies I'm biased towards.

This may have already been answered, but no it wasn't. He had MMR

That was dystopian, not science fiction.

I still considered it sci-fi.

Dystopia is a Sci-Fi subgenre.

Terminator
Frequency
Star Wars (Only the third one...prequel).
Zathura was pretty good too as it reminds me of Jumanji.

I liked Demon Seed, actually. Creepy as all hell. Especially the 'computer rape' part of it.

I'm surprised no one else has mentioned either of the X-Files movies (the second wasn't as good as the first) or 12 monkeys.

I very much enjoyed 12 Monkeys. I should have had that on my list.

Mostly stuff that's already been said.

Short list:

Aliens
The Terminator
Inception
Total Recall
Star Wars & Empire Strikes Back

Also, 12 Monkeys is a great call, I haven't seen that in like 10 years but I remember it being awesome.

Another "wild card" that I haven't seen in forever but I recall being f*****g great back in the day: Screamers.

It was in my list, just as 'twelve' not 12 (though the latter is the right spelling).

Also edit 'First Contact' to read 'Contact' (the Jodie Foster one, not the Sam Neill one which i've not seen).
Add in Back to the Future & Terminator films too - how could I have missed those ? So many i've got to re-watch.

It's hard to stick to 'exclusive' sci-fi genre, as some overlap. Alien gets put in horror more often, and was the cause of some pretty vivid dreams as a kid... right alongside nightmares about Daleks! That may explain a lot of how I turned out

Well thanks for reminding me how much I love "First Contact" (the Star Trek time travel one.)

Also off the top of my head:

Galaxy Quest
Brazil
Wrath Of Khan
oh hell, all the Star Treks!! !
And Star Wars also, while we're at it.
Gattaca
War of the Worlds.
The Puppet Masters.

Certainly there's more and I'll probably think of something later and go "D'oh" for not putting it on the list!

Saw Blade Runner (Director's Cut) and Species (The first one) for the first time. Both would make my favorite sci-fi list.
