Grave Of The Fireflies is probably the most depressing good movie I've ever seen. Sure some of the films dealing with the Holocaust (Schindler's List) and other genocides (Hotel Rwanda) were both depressing and good movies, but they had other things going for them which allowed you to detach yourself from the situation when things were getting too heavy. (I.E: Meryl Streep's acting in Sophie's Choice) Fireflies was just so 100% in your face and unrelenting, that even the quality of the animation wasn't enough to take your mind off of what was happening to the characters.

I don't think anyone mentioned Mean Creak. That film is not particularly uplifting although it seems they do the right thing in the end.

The Road - for the bleak post-apocalyptic views

Irreversible - best movie I never want to see again
(^^ If you're interested in this one, do NOT read up on it at all, people spoil the s**t out of it. Be prepared for a horrendous movie that is at the same time absolutely incredible, that's all the information you need beforehand.)

Happiness - .....just wow

American History X - every movie fan has to see this at least once

Seul Contre Tous (I Stand Alone) - bleak, bloody and terrifying

25th Hour - 2 scenes in particular

Life is Beautiful - talk about misleading title

Enter The Void - can you tell I have a thing for Gaspar Noe's work yet?

Buried - talk about kick in the sternum

Chloe - this could also be seen as a thriller, but it's not exactly sunshine and lollipops

Personally I don't like depressing movies because the real world is depressing enough. :?

As has been mentioned countless times before "Grave of the Fireflies." I watched it twice and decided to sell it. I like sad movies and animes, but this was too much for me to handle. It was good, but depressed me so bad that I never wanted to see it again.

The Pianist; as Concretebadger mentioned. Ugh, that movie has no arc. Something bad happens, then something else bad happens and things are worse; then something worse happens and now it's really really bad, then things get even wor........

Just saw The Illusionist (2010). You can add that one to my list. Also, the post above reminded me about Into The Wild, so I'll put the stamp on that one too.

To me, any film with successful rich career people is depressing. :(
