"Soap opera with zombies" is a fair comment, but the show wouldn't have survived for 4 seasons if it just focused on 'zombie action', and not the stories of the lives of the survivors.
I agree to a large extent. As exciting as Season 1 was, we would have gotten really tired of endless zombie bites. Season 2's farmhouse setting was a good respite and initiated a period of character development that was a nice idea. Season 3, IMHO, was treading water with the farmhouse being replicated by the jail setting and the governor's quaint little village. I watch on DVD, so I won't see season 4 until the Blu-Ray is released, but I understand they eventually burst forth for new uncharted territory.
While the producers have tried to shy away from the sci fi elements inherent in the setup, I really do wish they'd throw some of that into the pot, or we'd find out that one of the characters was actually involved in some way with starting the plague. If it is one of the more likeable ones, we the audience could experience some of the love/hate moral ambiguity inherent in the characters' actions.
