I prefer mostly US shows, because I can relate most to what I watch on these shows the most, and a lot of my favorite shows are from the US. However, I do watch some shows from the UK as well, mainly Monty Python, because I love the humor and jokes on that show.

I prefer neither as far as content is concerned, although a slight nod would go to the European product due to its relative lack of censorship. but I much prefer the visual texture of American TV as it is filmed at 29.94 frames per second [NTSC] versus 25 frames per second with European PAL broadcasts, which discernably coarsens the temporal resolution of the video, relatively speaking.

When I watch Netflix I most often prefer UK shows. Several U.S. TV shows are spin offs of British/UK shows. The original UK shows are better most often in my opinion. Examples of my favorite UK shows are: MI-5, Keeping Up Appearances, Sherlock Holmes with Benedict Cumberbatch, The IT Crowd, The Benny Hill Show, Dr. Who and Merlin to name a few. Also on Netflix I liked a few Australian shows.

Some of my favorite U.S. shows are: Monk, Perception, NCIS, Star Trek, and America's Funniest Videos. I do like reality shows that actually include competition of some actual talent or skill such as cooking, modeling, or singing. Otherwise unfortunately most reality shows are obnoxious and not very realistic. :eew:

I like UK and US shows equally - I think quality or your own preferences prevail regardless of where a show is made.
Among US shows I've liked are Star Trek,Colombo,Cheers,Frasier,The Big Bang Theory,Homeland(although 2 of its actors were actually British)
My Favourite UK shows include Only Fools And Horses,Fawlty Towers,One Foot In The Grave,Dr Who and factual programmes like Time Team and documentaries.

Recently there's been some continental European programmes on TV and it's a source that's probably been overlooked in the past.
I've really enjoyed the atmospheric and mysterious French serial Les Revenues (The Returned). It helps that I can understand French but
I imagine the subtitles might be a bit too fast for some people.

Do they flash by faster in comparison to some other shows--or closed captioning?

I actually like some foreign shows and movies because of the subtitles--no expectations that I'll have to hear what's being said to understand. :D (I turn on captioning for some English-speaking shows and films for the same reason.)

Are any of the shows you mentioned available online, to your knowledge?

There are some British shows I appreciate, like Mr Bean and Black Adder, but the vast majority of the movies and series I like/ watch/ own on DVD, are American.

Here in Norway we don't dub foreign shows and movies (unless they're for children). When the shows /movies are in English I'm very glad for that, because they Norwegian voice-overs always sound so tragic. But I really wish the few Korean/Japanese/French/Spanish movies I've watched had been dubbed to English. I hate reading movies! I miss out on so much action. The great movie "confessions" were particularly bad in that aspect as it had so much dialogue.

I don't think the subtitles on The Returned flashed past quicker than usual,in hindsight it's probably because I was testing my French by translating the dialogue in my head and simultaneously double checking it against the subtitles.

Not sure about availability online, but I find imdb.com (Internet Movie Database) a good place to start for information on tv shows as well as movies.

I like a lot of UK series, though there are a number of US shows I consider high-quality, too.
Particularly like the British mystery shows (cop/law dramas), though their humor is also a delight, too.
I pay no attention to "so-called reality/competition" programs from either nation, though.

UK shows I've enjoyed include Foyle's War, DCI Banks, North Square, Endeavor, Doc Martin, Father Ted...
US shows I've enjoyed include Nurse Jackie, Girls, Weeds, The Shield, Veep, The Newsroom...

As for the other question, am not a fan of subtitled/foreign media.
