Yes, Kyoified, you have a good point there. Here in America, anime is generally seen as "children's shows" because it's animated. In Japan, it's not like that at all, obviously, because they have genres for all ages. I was watching Evangelion when my cousin visited once, and she was completely surprised that they were swearing "on a cartoon". I had to explain to her that they actually make cartoons for older audiences in Japan, and this was one of them.

I think that a lot of anime actually has more depth, complex story lines, and interesting characters than a lot of shows here in the US that are made with real actors and actresses. That's why I generally prefer to watch it, instead of dramas or sci fis on TV (though I still love Buffy, the X-files, Monk, and The Twilight Zone).

I also watch for the art, of course :D .

It's true! The cartoons here, such as Spongebob, don't have any drama. Anime, on the other hand, always has hidden stories within the plot. Like in Evangelion. Yes, the whole thing is about the angels and such...but the characters actually have stories and past times that make them who they are....such as Rei. Also, in Anime, of course the events can't actually happen... (like destroying half of Tokyo while battling an angel while piloting the huge Evas....) but, even though they can't...the creators make it seem as if it could. Where as in cartoons like Spongebob, it is obvious that the events cannot happen. (such as making a fire under the ocean...or a talking sponge living in a pineapple...) Also, in Anime, they worry about real-life situations. One of the top examples is rent. In Chobits, Hideki, a college student, gets a full-time job to pay for college, and he barely has enough for food. The budget is one of Hideki's main struggles, so it is brought up a lot. But, again...in Spongebob...he never pays the rent...and he never gets his paycheck even though half the show is taken place at his work.

Also in american cartoons, the art is definitly not as good as in Anime. And most american cartoons don't have shading either....adding to the noticable fact that it is a cartoon. In Anime, the characters seem life-like...due to the wide range of emotion (Asuka) or the lack of emotion (Rei) That they can express.

No, lol. I LOVE Sailormoon...in Japanese. The dubbing is horrible!! (ie: Haruka and Michiru--aka: Amara and Michelle-- Cousins? are they TRYING to promote incest?) I own the Stars series (the one that they didn't mess up by dubbing) It is a great show and I went to Tekkoshocon as Sailor Uranus. But...when they had it playing on Cartoon Network they made it seem like a childrens show, when really, it is much more than that!!

Yes`Yes this is problem I have everbody who I meet finds that anime is like a kiddie show but i have my ways to get them to belive me  its not evil though just clever and you know Gundam wing right came on toonami 4 years ago dubbed heavliy and this made alot of kids like it just for the mech destruction WHICH is WRONG it wasn't made for kids it has more MORE of a plot than that its not even about the Mechs just blowing up I went to a store where they where selling Gundam toys( its called suncoast :P was seeing if their were any good deals on things that they sell which are movies and such ) and I see this 7 year old buy with his Mumie  a gundam toy he just wants to blow things up or pretend anyway that he will with the toy he has no idea of the plot of the anime and this is with not only this but many others which is why people think that anime is for kids and another thing is those gundam action figures :x where said to be bad for kids and that IS BECAUSE THE SHOW WAS MADE FOR PEOPLE WHO UNDERSTAND THE SHOW NOT JUST THE ACTION IN IT  this is just an example of the problem which is why all anime lovers need to explain this to misguided people who have been fooled 8)

ANIME is not specifically ghost in the shell, and not all anime is RATED R, rather most is rated for little kids. I guess you've never watched hamtaro.

(btw, I watched gits when I was 7, it was amazing. again, not all kids are stupid)

I think the mistake a lot of people make about anime is that it is not a genre, it is a medium.

Someone told me a really funny, but true quote, recently:

"Judging all anime by watching Pokemon is like judging all of American film by watching Muppets in Space."

I don't really like it that much.. I've liked a few when I was younger like pokemon and DBZ, I like to draw in that style, but I would never consider myself into anime.

I'm not really a fan of subtitles and and fuss over the origional Japanese episodes, I'm perfectly happy with the english versions of any I watch. And I enjoy the plain America cartoons, too, as it's what I grew up with. :)

Ah.. I don't like either of those, but I've seen them a bit, too. Those are the shows most people in the US are familiar with, too.

I don't really like to draw in the anime style, but I do admire the art. I have nothing against it, it's just not my style.

I prefer subtitles mainly because a lot of the English voices can be severely annoying (like Asuka Sohyru Langely on Evangelion, ugh!). I also like to see what the director originally intended for the series. I do watch it in English from time to time, especially if I am drawing or something and can't give the show my full attention.

I also like American cartoons, but I prefer the ones I grew up with, especially Batman, X-Men, and Gargoyles :) .

What American cartoons do you watch?
