Is the Rain Man stereotype a problem these days for a younger generation though, because almost everyone I know today, that was born in the 80s, hasn't even heard of that movie, and would probably therefore, not think of it, when they think of autism, would they?

In the almost 7 years I have been on this forum complaints about people misjudging them based on the Rain Man stereotype have been a constant. I did not tally the age of the complainers. I am surprised that young people do not know of Rain Man as it is an often replayed movie. Young people do know old movies such as The Godfather, so why would they not know Rain Man?

Oh well I thought movies like The Godfather, or say Casablanca, or Star Wars for example, were more well known among younger people is because they are much more well known and get a lot more word of mouth compared to Rain Man.

I am also surprised? however it may be possible the OP has never searched for it or its become appropriated as a meme/label bu young people for something different. For example among hip/hop rappers the term "Rainman" designates somebody who is rich who "showers" girls with money

Oh, well I knew of the movie long before, and I like it, but when I asked my friends if they have seen it before, they say they haven't heard of it. So I was just going by people I know, who are probably average joes in their 30s.

Perhaps your friends don't know who Tom Cruise is?

The most frustrating thing to me is how autistics in movies/TV are almost always savants in a STEM field. I have no aptitude for STEM. Neither do many people on the spectrum.

Though that's actually the least of my problems with The Good Doctor. I just don't care for medical dramas, and hardly ever watch network shows anymore...too many episodes...too much filler.

Ben Affleck was a forensic accountant, Dustin Hoffman was institutionalised.

'The Good Doctor' in its first two seasons at least was a medical drama. This past season it was a soap opera.

Are there any movies or TV shows where you have an autistic character who is not a savant a particular field?

Keep The Change - Film
Mary and Max - Film
Dad's In Heaven With Nixon - Film

Those are three films off the top of my head where none of the autistic characters are savants.

There's also some award winning biographies that were made into movies
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1533081/

I recommend this one as it's really cute

Oh okay thanks, I haven't seen those but can check them out.

Maybe one of the reasons why they have to embellish autism to a degree is to make it more entertaining, otherwise it just wouldn't be that interesting to watch on screen? Isn't it like that with anything subject matter, in order to make it entertaining?

I found the three movies I mention to be entertaining and interesting. Keep the Change and Dad's In Heaven With Nixon didn't embellish autism and didn't need to in order to be interesting. In both films the autistic actors weren't acting autistic, they are autistic. They were being themselves. Mary and Max: I don't know that I'd say the autistic (Asperger's) character was embellished but I suppose it's possible since it was a claymation movie.

Another film that is documentary about an autistic woman from Philadelphia named Dina. The name of the film is Dina.
