Quote:
When asked if Brennan might not actually have Asperger syndrome - a condition many doctors consider a form of high-functioning autism - Deschanel nodded.

"Hart Hanson, the creator of the show, and I discuss, you know, that my character almost has Asperger syndrome, and, you know, if maybe if it was a film, that I maybe specifically would have Asperger's," she said.

"If you look at the character of Zack, [a Brennan subordinate who's] played by Eric Millegan, he almost definitely has Asperger syndrome," she added.

"I think it's fascinating to have a character who's brilliant in one area and clueless" in others, Deschanel said.

"And it's so sweet that she's trying to learn about things. You know, I talked to a psychologist who specializes in people with Asperger's and she said she's worked with kids who start at 12 years old not being able to understand, you know, a social interaction almost at all and then are now in college and can have relationships that are almost more in touch than a lot of kids their age, because they work so much in therapy and work so hard," she said.

Apparently, they based her character on someone who has Asperger but she is still never stated to have the condition. There are few memories of her childhoold in the show and some people argued that she did not seem autistic in them though I would argue that children are very different (especially with their family and as long as they do not realize their difficulties) and that it was not depicting all of her childhood.

I found this forum because I kept saying to Hubby that Brennan had to have AS because I could see our 6yo AS son as being exactly like her at 30. I eventually looked it up and here I am.

I know this thread is really old but I am rewatching the series from the beginning. I had only seen about the first 2 seasons in the past. A lab scene was just on and when the Zack guy was talking my dad said "He talks like a robot", sigh.

My understanding is that Aspies don't know how to *display* empathy, but they feel it deeply.

There'll always be an impairment of empathy; from feeling none at all, to a delayed reaction of such (any other iteration where it's impaired, of course). What people with ASDs don't show is reciprocal interaction, i.e., a lack of two-way social interaction.

Empathy is an alien concept to me. I can fake it, but I rarely feel it for other people.

I never watch this show anyway.

I know it's been a while since anyone posted but I have to comment. My son, who is almost 11, has Asperger's. He is EXTREMELY empathetic. Not all aspies are alike. I definitely think Bones definitely shows a lot of the Asperger's characteristics. Everybody needs to remember that every aspie is different. You can't place them in a box and say that aspies don't do this and do this....it's very much based on each individual.

My son has been to a social skills group. He knows how to hold a conversation and look people in the eye. A lot can be learned by aspies so all these qualifications of what an aspie is or isn't can't be put in a checklist. Jus as with the rest of the human race, every aspie is unique
