I value your insights into Trekkiedom since I'm such a newbie in that area.

As far as your other "attacks"...

I've been attacked by Autism Speaks... heck, it should be caused Autism Attacks except that the people doing the attacking aren't autistic (usually). You're not "somebody" on the spectrum unless you've been attacked at least once by them. - welcome to the club.

re: The alpha males... I'm not an alpha... in fact, I'm probably not even an omega... and I'm married ... to a female... so, I guess that makes you right and LPP wrong.

Then there's ragtime and the anti-gay Jesus stuff. Christian doesn't mean Catholic.. so, the pope isn't necessarily the issue. The pope generally dislikes gays... dunno why, half the Catholic priests seem to be (or have been once) gay.. but anyway, that doesn't matter. There's even theories around that suggest that Jesus and his apostles may have been gay... Now, if you believe that, and you still believe and follow Jesus... that makes you Christian but not anti-gay. Goodbye Ragtime...

I do like some Star Trek episodes. The Corbomite Maneuver and Balance of Terror were good ones I watched from the original series, and The Best of Both Worlds I have enjoyed.

You raised good points anyway because we were hijacking the thread a bit from "I hate Star Trek" to "I love Doctor Who"...

So in answer to your original post....

I prefer the Star Wars world to the Star Trek one (though I prefer DW even more). The only thing that annoys me about SW is the fans who get upset about everything - especially the EP1 haters - they're a bunch of wusses who just can't handle new characters.

Anyway, I always liked the Trek movies (a bit)... well, I liked ST2 and ST4. I tolerated 3 and Generations. Only saw First contact very recently and thought it was good.

Didn't like the old Trek shows too much but it was better than a lot of other stuff at the time... I always liked Spock because I could relate to him.

I've only just started watching Next Generation about a month ago and have finished Season 1. Q was abysmal - really terrible... I hate the idea that such a dull being is a bit of a recurring character. I'm slowly coming to like data but he's always been too much of a Spock wannabe.

Oh, and if you want to say "I hate star trek 5", be my guest. That movie was considered one of the worst points in the franchise (although there may have been some episodes in "Enterprise" that were worse), and many trekfans disown it as well... There's a commonly-held belief that the odd-numbered movies suck, while the even-numbered movies are good, although there are some exceptions (ST3 was decent, if a little farfetched, while Nemesis, the 10th movie, was considered mediocre at best)...

Next Generation gets about 50 times better after season 2 ends. Season 1 was considered the lowest point in the entire series. Seasons 4 through 6 are the best ones in the series, although the show kinda jumps the shark at the end of season 6 there...

Spock and Data are largely the same character type, but there are several significant differences. Spock is more disdainful of humanity, while Data is curious about it (if you want to compare them side by side, watch the episode "Unification"; it's the one episode in all of star trek to feature both of them)

If your primary complaint is either "star trek plots are too episodic" or "star trek is too utopian and doesn't reflect the real world", I recommend Deep Space Nine. It's basically Star Trek's answer to Babylon 5 (it even ran concurrent to B5; the shows often "competed" with each other)... As for the other 2 series, Voyager appealed too much to pop culture to really be of any interest unless you're a hardcore trekfan, and Enterprise was merely the franchise jumping the shark...

I thought it would be kinder not to mention it.
Nemesis was a terrible disappointment too. very obvious.

I'll keep an eye out for "Unification" but since I've just hired Season 2 discs 1 and 2, it might be a long way off yet.



No, my main complaint has always been that I don't like the ST world where everyone is "perfect", happy and most of all, conformist. Starfleet is military, so having everyone conform is important to them but as an aspie, I have always been a non-conformist.

That, I expect is part of the appeal of Doctor Who. He doesn't conform to anyone's standards. Not even the time lords.

I hate that and The Star Wars trilogy. I think the first was excellent until it got silly from there on.

DS9 was enjoyable however, I did enjoy voyager and Enterprise (Voyager since they focused on the Borg a great deal in that series (Seven of Nine was a very interesting character)

Deep Space Nine is by far my favorite of the trek series. Darker, fuller character development, deeper investigation of the species involved and conflict between the main characters.

I'm a big B5 fan too. Was relieved when SciFi picked up the final year. I wrote a term paper on Chaos and Order because of it.

I'm starting out on Season 7 of the Next Generation... so I'll soon have watched all of them.

What comes next, Voyager? DSN? Enterprise?

Sorry - I'd never watched Trek other than the originals (and the films) before this year.

There are good elements to Star Trek - it can actually be pretty interesting. Wrath of Khan and First Contact are both great. However, I don't plan on watching the new J.J. Abrams movie. Star Trek, in my opinion, runs on a fairly narrow and limited formula. There's only so much you can do with it. I think they've milked this cow for all that it's worth, and it's time to move on.
