yes it's incredibly earth bound, this revival. they did have at least one two parter set in the US, but it's still earth. i wouldn't mind a non-human assistant. or a non british one anyway. chinese, black, whatever. there's a focus on the families of the assistants too (they often feature in some way) which is something i don't recall from the older series. and i'm tired of dr who falling in lerv all the time.

yeah Martha was black - I forgot, she seemed so white. Martha and Rose were interchangeable though - same personality, and Donna is just a variation on the same theme, assertive plucky English women. Those 3 are so similar it's getting boring.

Yes, it's way too earthbound at the moment though I wouldn't be happy with an alien companion who didn't look humanoid. I hate the Star Trek thing of ... ooh he's got a funny forehead, or a funny haircut and ears or... a funny nose-bridge - so therefore they're alien.

I'd be ok with an Alien companion like Turlough, Susan or Romana - ie: completely human looking but just from somewhere else. I didn't count Leela because her ancestors were from Earth. Alternatively, maybe someone from a different time, like Jamie, Victoria, Zoe, Cressida, Vicki or Stephen would be good.

Yay! Bring on the Earth Reptiles... though, maybe not the Myrka. I'd like to see some Zygons and also... I'd love to see something with Sutekh and the Osirians set before his imprisonment.

Oh and Skaro... Wasn't it established in one of the 8th Doctor Novels that it wasn't the original Skaro which was destroyed? It wouldn't matter anyway since it's just a radioactive spec by then. The thals would certainly have moved on - established in Planet of the Daleks.

Yeah, I didn't like that either... how does having a human appearance with one or two odd features make you an "alien"? However, I think it would be interesting if the Doctor had a non-humanoid companion for a change... the only one he ever really had was K-9.

You're not alone... I and a lot of other Who fans agree that "Pyramids of Mars" was one of the best Doctor Who episodes. Sutekh was one of those villains I was talking about who was a great character but never came back.

Hmm... I wouldn't know. But having your homeworld destroyed never stopped the Cybermen, and certainly wouldn't stop the planet-conquering Daleks. Skaro was pretty much a dead world by the time the Daleks were invented anyway, due to the Kaled-Thal war.

well, he did have Kamelion, but I agree the only one he ever "really" had was K9. An earth reptile would be good for a couple of episodes... there's something sad about what happens to their species - I think that one would work well with David Tennant. An Ice Warrior would also be fascinating as a character - all honor (more than a touch of Klingon style) - probably not so suitable for David Tennant.

I've just finished listening to the I, Davros series which is entirely set on Skaro - ending just before Genesis of the Daleks. It's brilliant! They worked so many continuity concepts into it, like the Dals and the Vagaas. Davros's mother is brilliant and the motivations and discoveries of Davros are all pretty good too.

Yeah, that's kind of what I meant... While technically Kamelion could be considered a "companion," you can't really count him because he only managed to appear in two or three episodes. Apparently, he spent most of his time hidden away somewhere in the TARDIS... "Gosh, could he be an Aspie??"

Cool. Does it explain what happened to Davros which left him crippled and scarred like that?

Oh, and I've been thinking about your question "Is the Doctor 'The Other'"... I'm almost certain that he at least used to be... that's why they didn't give "The Other" a name. But from what I understand, The Other, Rassilon, and Omega were like a triumvirate. This means that he would've known Rassilon personally. But in "The Five Doctors," it's obvious that Rassilon is more like a "legendary figure" to the Doctor (like when the 2nd Doctor has to recite the "nursery rhyme" to remember how to get into the Tower.) And at first, Rassilon didn't seem to recognize any of the Doctor's incarnations. So the Doctor, in that form, couldn't have known Rassilon personally... either that or his memory from being The Other was erased or something.

I just saw Midnight. Gives Silent Hill a run for its money. But there's a competition in one of the Doctor Who magazines. [sardonic]"Draw the Midnight monster"[/sardonic]. It was a meme monster, I'm not convinced it even had a form. That movement the drivers saw, the banging on the doors, maybe the thing works initially by sensory inflitration, before it takes over a vulnerable person's mind.

mm wasn't my sort of thing. too much acting. too much like a one act play.

fairly cheap to make though, i guess the budget gets low at times.

Well, you do know that the guy who played Professor Hobbes has a Doctor Who connection all of his own, doncha?

Aaaaaargh!! ! 8O
I just got hooked on the show this year, and now there are only going to be three Dr.Who specials for 2009 while the Doctor is off playing Hamlet. To stave off withdrawal, I've watched the Season 1-3 DVDs, found out that Season 4 comes out Nov.18 (US), and even got desperate enough to try the Dr.Who books. I think the books came from episode proposals that the producers decided weren't good enough for TV. Most of them have a great premise and terrible plot/character development, or a mundane plot with great writing.

The good news is that BBC Video has been re-releasing episodes of the old series to provide some history and context for those of us who missed the fun the first time around.

Dr Who is the one thing I really miss since moving to France. To add insult to injury they have started to screen it on tv here - dubbed into French

I just need France Telecom to lay some decent cables then - here in rural France all I've got is crackly old dial up.
