Disaster Movie is (or was recently) voted the worst moie of all time on IMDB.
Brooks movies have been only OK recently. Good, breezy entertainment, but not the powerhouses like Young Frankenstein, or even the hidden gems like High Anxiety.
We'd been noticing this as well. I don't know whether Mel Brooks used up all his best ideas, lashed out at everything he wanted to already, or just lost his edge with age. Maybe it just takes a lot of energy to come up with all that mockery. You can't help wondering what takes a man from the brilliance of "Springtime for Hitler" in The Producers to the half-hearted circumcision jokes of Robin Hood, Men in Tights (brilliant title, mind you, lots of good jokes, but lots of truly weak stuff, such as "Will Scarlet O'Hara". I couldn't get away with jokes like that in high school). Of course, The Producers was a sort of therapeutic experience for him, he was very driven in making it, anyway... but he was a lot younger. Now... now he's a cartoon sheep. It's nice to hear his voice when the kids watch Jakers, and yet a little sad.
