City of God

Excellent Brazilian crime drama about organized crime in a subrub of Rio. Based on real events.

I saw Zero Dark Thirty this evening.
It's better than the viewer rating on IMDB in my opinion.
The details of the investigations and the events leading up to the raid on Bin Laden's compound are a bit tedious but that's the intent of the movie.
WARNING: If you have an above average aversion to the practice of enhanced interrogation (i.e. torture, degradation, deprivation, etc) you might not want to see this movie.

Watched it again with my parents. Understood it better this time around.

Lincoln. Wasn't as good as I thought. (I wasn't expecting a political talk fest).

Indonesian documentary called Pertaruhan, on the topic of the position of women in Indonesia. It was very educational for me.

Total Recall (2012)

Despite having such a horrible case of the flu that I was lying on my side, shaking uncontrollably, and getting up every ten minutes to vomit every food and drink I foolishly tried to put in my body, I managed to enjoy this quite a bit. The 1990 version is one of my favorite movies and the remake was never going to match it, but it's well made and entertaining and manages to do enough new things to warrant its existence.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)

Funny how people always focus on Leatherface when the other family members are far creepier. The scene with the hitchhiker in the van is so uncomfortable that I can hardly bear to watch it. I could write a book on this movie, but I have very little to say that hasn't already been written a million times.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986)

Fans of the original either love or hate the sequel. I like it. It's nothing I'll ever want to watch as much as the first one, but it's good. You just have to go into it knowing that it's a silly parody of the original. For me, having a Texas sequel with a crazy-ass Dennis Hopper throwing around three chainsaws while yelling about being the "lord of the harvest" is gold. Also dig Bill Moseley: "Leatherface, you b!†ch hog! Look what you did to my Sonny Bono wig!"

Hunger Games and Kingdom of Heaven and The Passion of Christ. This last one was so disgusting - just one bloody, gore religious porn. And this raven that pecked out the eye of the man on the cross - eewww.

A Haunted House.

Do not go see it if you're easily offended. That's all I'll say about it. :lmao:

What did you reckon? I enjoyed Temple Grandin. I have not seen Adam. Mozart and the Whale was awful not really convinced about the performance of 2 main characters.

Sightseers (2012) Brilliant black comedy.

"Her Name is Sabine" - a good film about the autistic sister of the film maker.

"Kon-Tiki" - interesting documentary by Thor Heyerdahl about testing the hypothesis that the Polynesian islands could have been populated by sea travel from South America.

"At The Earth's Core" - a really bad, late 60s version.

"Tiny Furniture" I probably would have thought this was a better film had I been closer to the age of the film maker. Now it just comes across as pointless.

"Mean Streets" better than I remembered it. It's interesting to see the connection to "Goodfellas" in this film.

"Two Lane Blacktop" after a while I got bored and didn't really pay much attention to the ending so I can't say if the film was really as pointless as it seemed.

Seasons 1 and 2 of "Downton Abby" - not really a film, but I'll put it here anyway. A decent soap opera with high production value. Entertaining fluf.

Dredd

I could have done without all the slo-mo exit wound porn in a few sequences, but all-in-all I enjoyed the movie.

It would have been better with a bit more comic relief/satire (as in the comic).

It's too bad the movie flopped so hard at the box office. I'd like to see a few more tales from the streets of Mega City One.

"The Friends of Edie Coyle". Robert Mitchum does a good job as a tired, aging small time crook who, trying to avoid jail time, starts giving up his friends to the cops. But things don't go so well. This ain't a great film, but it is a good, solid example of 70s crime drama. The Cinematography gets pretty good in the second half of the film.

"Gosford Park". I know Robert Altman thought it was a good idea, but his use of layered sound is really annoying. I already have a problem understanding dialog in a crowd, I don't need the same effect while I'm watching a movie. I had a hard time following the film, mostly because I couldn't keep my interest on it... Much like every other Robert Altman film I've ever seen.
