Iron Man 3

Great action scenes - especially liked how Tony Stark was suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. But why did they have to have the Mandarin be fake?

I just saw Iron Man 3 myself. Pretty good movie. That fact about the Mandarin being a 'face' was a surprise.

I saw it in theatre earlier this year, and I loved it. I actually preferred it to Man Of Steel. I didn't really mind the twist with the Mandarin, as I felt it kind of redeemed the fact that they hadn't stuck with the character's true nature from the comic books (where he's Chinese nobility).

It actually surprised me how little I minded the lack of a more traditional Iron Man villain after Obadiah Stane and Whiplash, as I thought the villain for IM3 was more on a par with Tony in terms of inventiveness and resources. It was a nice bonus that he had his own personal elite of pyrokinetics, and gained access to those powers himself for the grande finale. And Guy Pearce did a great job with that role.

My only gripes were that the insertion of the Iron Patriot armour was completely unnecessary, and something else toward the end of the movie, but that would spoil things for those who haven't seen it yet.

Alter Egos.

Superhero comedy of Brendon, who is also the superhero Fridge (he has freezing powers). Fridge has being sleeping with a girl, but she is cheating on her boyfriend Brendon. His friend, See Through (has xray vision - kind of a pervert) tells him, "But you are Brendon." The only problem is, Fridge doesn't want to be a "loser" like Brendon. Sure enough, Brendon wants to break up with his girlfriend - even though she tells him, "But your the same person!"
Very funny for a zero budget flick.

Guns, Girls, And Gambling.

Action comedy starring Christian Slater as Elvis impersonator John Smith (or is he?) who is accused of stealing a war mask from an Indian casino, after losing an Elvis impersonator contest. Both the Apache Indians and a corrupt Rancher (Powers Boothe), and are willing to pay a lot - and to kill - to get it. The fact of the matter is, though, neither is the rightful owner. Add to that a mystery blonde female assassin with dubious allegiances gets involved. A surprise twist is at the end, where greed is everyone's downfall. On top of that, Gary Oldman makes an appearance as an Elvis impersonator.

Commando, starring Schwarzenegger of course, and co-starring Rae Dawn Chong as his ally, with Alyssa Milano in a supporting bit as Arnie's daughter who gets kidnapped by the bad guys. It was entertaining. It featured some of Arnie's more famous one-liners, including 'I lied' when he drops a bad guy off a cliff after first promising to 'kill him last'. Said villain was portrayed by David Patrick Kelly, who I recognised as Luther the screaming guy from Warriors:

Also the movie features the priceless line 'Why doesn't he call himself Girl George' at the beginning, after which Arnie relays to Alyssa that, when he grew up in East-Germany (his characters is East-German), he was taught that pop music was subversive and eeevil... and that maybe they had a point with that. :chin:
This is never really resolved throughout the movie, but at the end they do play a fat 80s synthrock tune, so maybe this signifies that John Matrix has made peace with 'the Devil's music'. But again, awesome action. One guy against a South American president's entire personal militia, and he comes out on top. Gotta love 80s action flicks, they had heart!

Gravity

The new film from director Alfonso Cuaron.

Sandra Bullock and George Clooney play astronauts stuck in space after a storm of asteroids destroy the Hubble space telescope that they were sent to repair.

Visually amazing with great performances from both Bullock and Clooney.

Filth (2013)

Based on Irvine Welsh's novel, James McAvoy plays Bruce Robertson, a corrupt, sadistic and psychotic policeman who is investigating a brutal murder. Knowing that he is in line for a promotion, he starts to scheme, smoke, snort, drink and shag his way to the top, playing his colleagues (Including Jamie Bell) off against one another while sending lewd phone calls to the wife of Eddie Marsan's neurotic and insecure man he has befriended. It's not too long before his personal demons and self-destructive habits begin to catch up to him.

Though not on the same level as Trainspotting, McAvoy is a sweary and hair-trigger revelation and the first half is all laughs before it gets really serious. The novel's tapeworm parts are replaced by Jim Broadbent's wacky and wide-eyed psychiatrist, who steals the show.

All in all, a good outing. Avoid if you don't like full on sex scenes or violence or drugs.

Rush (I) (2013) - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1979320/

source: http://www.vulture.com/2013/09/toronto- ... movie.html

Quote:
“I wouldn't call the humor a complete accident, but it was not something you would necessarily identify in the first draft of the script,” he said. “The more we did our research, the more the script got funnier. Lauda reads almost like a guy with Asperger's, but when you meet him, that's not the case at all — there's a dry Austrian wit there, this no-bullshit clarity, which he wears like a badge and can use like a weapon. He doesn't care about your pushback, and that's funny, to hear someone who expresses himself that way.”

Pretty much what I experienced. I thought the guy might have some quirky behaviour related to Asperger's but I thought I Google it first and it seems I wasn't the only one that thought that way. I would like to see what people from Austria is like one day.

I saw Vanilla Sky, starring Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz, w/ Cameron Diaz and Kurt Russell.

I was expecting it to be one of those standard romantic flicks Tom Cruise has made a baker's dozen of. But then it kind of turns around on you and becomes this psychological thriller. I was rather intrigued right up until the ending which left me disappointed, but I don't want to spoil the ending in this post. Tom Cruise has always been kind of a guilty pleasure of mine, even with all his Scientology hi-jinks going on.
